Manifold Crud
The thick black crud on the inlet manifold is coming from the crankcase breather, not the EGR. On the Disco 300TDI there was a service requirement to clean the manifold AND THE INTERCOOLER. This improves engine performance because of improved cooling of the incoming charge. Cleaning the rubber hoses will not make a significant difference because they are rubber and a poor conductor of heat. Cleaning the intercooler on the TD4 is a bit of a fag, (front bumper off to start with!).
If the EGR valve is sealing properly the easiest way to dispense with recirculation is to blank the vacuum pipe from the control solenoid.
