Dropping the petrol tank on a p38

How easy is it to drop the petrol tank on a 4.6 p38 as the petrol pump has stopped working, I have tested from the inertia switch and it comes live when the ignition is on.

From what i understand you have to remove the filler neck then the 5 bolt securing the tank.

How long does it take to do?
How easy is it?
 
I did it in a couple of hours using axle ramps. The hardest bit is getting at the filler neck, the rest is reasonably straight forward, just follow the instructionsin in RAVE
 
Hi, Wont start, cant hear the fuel pump running when switching the ignition on. It ran on gas okay the other day but cant get it started on gas due to cold weather. Ive checked the plugs and they seem to be sparking ok.

Ive checked the rave manual and the inertia switch is the last component the current goes through before the pump - Checked with multimeter, i am getting current when switching the ignition on.

Not too sure weather to cut a hole in the floor behaing the rear seat of drop the tank.

How thick is the steel? Will tin snips be upto the job? Or perhaps a nibbler?

Dont really want o create sparks.
 
A simple test with a pressure gauge will confirm wether the pump is on it's way out. You should have 55 psi at the sample point or there abouts. Any garage should be able to do this for a minimal charge.

I have got someone to turn on the ignition and i have pressed the valve in on the fuel rail and nothing comes out.
 
Ive decided im going to drop the petrol tank, Doesnt look to hard in the rave manually.

I think the pump may have burned out due to running low on petrol while running on lpg.
 
Agree, if its a one off job, which it should be, then you're better off dropping the tank than cutting a hole in the floor.

Suppose its a safer job on a diesel than a petrol, but just observe the usual precautions.
 
Just to let you know i took the tank off, It took about 3hrs to get off, Pump is completely dead, put 12v to it and nothing.
 
Hello mate , are you sure it dont need a re synic Do you really need to take the tank out ,cos if it needs a re synic the pump wont work mate , hope this helps ,,,

has oanyone done a write up on this procedure with pictures? I am thinking of doing this myself, what is it about the filler neck pipe that makes it difficult?
also do you need a ramp or have to raise any part of the vehicle up?
what tools do i need and any other repalcement parts apart from the pump itself? olives , gaskets etc?

I did read somewhere about cutting a hole in the boot, but I would needa template to work from, again any help appreciated.
 
Hi.
I.ve cut a hole in mine. Did some deeeeeep water crossings since and no problems. Will recommend it.

I used a jig saw and just lifted up the loose pieces as I went along.

Did you drop the tank aswell, - I was thinking the jigsaw blade would of cut a hole in the tank too.!! btw how much of a gap is there between the tank and the floorpan?

Did you use a template or can you mesuare me up some datum point for reference?

i cut the floor on one of my lpg p38s ive owned it 7 yrs and its had 3 pumps it takes 10 mins to change now,if you want to be really tight fisted when the pump fails remove the complete unit with sender,unclip the cup bowl from bottom remove pump go down your locall breakers and get one out of a rover it fits a treat for a £10,better than £130.

Have you had 3 pumps because you replace with second-hand ones?
 
There is about 3cm gap between floor and tank. I first drilled a 10mm hole and peeked through it. I then cut a little bit, lifted the floor and peeked in again. Kept doing this till I had a big enough hole to undo the fuel pump. My pump packed up, and I replaced it with a aftermarket piece. It cost me about 35 pounds.
You can have a look at Range Rovers to see where to cut the hole.

yes secondhand as the goodlady wife thinks it will run forever with the petrol light glowing then blames me when its out of fuel hence burned out pump,i got fed up after buying a brand new unit and it being destroyed by the wife first time round. when it happened again i persued the quick fix method its saved me some £££ bless her
