Drilling a 36mm hole!

Cobalt bit be no good for drilling the many small holes?But still aint the tright tool for the job, but aint my tools or job!
 
A step drill is no good for this diameter hole/thickness of steel.

A hole saw will take you most of your life to penetrate 6mm steel.

A garage won't have the tooling to do this job.

In fact other than a labour intensive method, ie drilling a series of 6 or 8mm dia holes to form the rough circle prior to dressing the circle with a flap wheel, it isn't a job for DIY tooling.


I think you're left with 2 options:-

Either buy a 'decent' quality drill (6 or 8mm should suffice) and drill a series of holes (as above and labour intensive) to make the circle. When I say decent quality I mean buy one from an engineer supplier...

or...

ask an engineering workshop to do it for you on their mill/borer or radial drill if the bed is big enough. Circa £20

I would be happy to do this for you but for the problem of getting it to me!

Oh and if you do do it yourself just bear in mind that WD40, as good as it is for its intended purpose, it is NOT a cutting fluid nor is it a coolant!
Also, if you choose to drill a series of holes you would do well to use a multi-speed drill so that you can drill it 'slow' enough. A single speed drill only knows one speed...full chat, which will result in burnt out drill bits before you even get through your first hole!
 
like said a hole saw and plenty of cutting fuild, i do this stuff every day (not with cars) and 6mm is not to thick for a hole saw, i cut 20mm stainless with a large hole saw fine, so long as you go slow with plent of fuild and dont let it get hot it will be fine

It is too thick for a hole saw if using a single speed pistol drill! I wouldn't be in a hurry to do it with a variable speed pistol drill either.

I would either use the series of small holes route or....well take it to work 'cos I do this kinda thing every day...also not on cars.
 
havent had any luck yet, been really busy this week all over the place..
Newquay, plymouth, london, newmarket...

A guy here at work told me to go to a garage where he used to work he said they might be able to help, as it's local here I'm going to try that first...
then I'll give a call to the guy you recommended MHM....
 
Get yourself a decent holesaw and plenty cutting compound and you will be fine, a couple of mins a hole max. I'ts worth spending a few quid on a holesaw, we use starret regular and 6mm is nothing, ive done loads through 40mm frames when on site without a mag drill and broach. Just take your time, keep it cool. If you dont have a variable speed drill blip the trigger and friction will keep the speed down. If you were close id be more than happy to do if for you. And remember, holesaws drill big, so go down a bit in size rather than up. You can always remove a bit extra if needed.
