P38A Dreaded EAS fault (Max 35MPH) is this going to empty my wallet ?

I would tend to agree. Splicing adds at least another two potential points of failure which might come back to bite you later.Edited for accuracy

I'd splice right now maybe to just make sure that the problem is the airline and not in the collet or airspring and maybe as a temporary fix so you can keep the car running until you get a proper length of air line in.

a wee update and plea for help !

move tested the existing line with a schraeder valve at either end and it is fine with no leakage.

I still am getting a leak from the Collet on the new air bag.

Someone mentioned O-rings and, to be honest, I can’t see any o-rings in there.
I did recover 2 from the old air bag.
Do they sit in front of or behind the metal collet ?

Behind.... or under the collet. Pry out the collet and you'll see em. Might need a torch.
 
Knitting needle..... or is it crochet (I forget which it is- the one with the lil hook at the end) needle is the tool of choice to remove them.

I usually avoid reusing orings once they've been removed- even if they are otherwise brand new. There's a chance you damage them while you poke around in there trying to get them out. Do you have an unused set of 6mm ID orings you could use once you've winkled the existing ones out of there?

Need to go buy some knitting (or is it crochet?) needles myself. My niece who DOES knit/ crochet seems to have put a lock on her knitting basket. I dunno why but there's a lock on there now. Never was one before. Didn't think there was anything that valuable in there..... and I have't raided it for her needles all THAT often.

Anyhoo.... knitting or crochet needles on the old shopping list. I'm sure the shop will know which ones I want.

Ok, but if it’s a brand new, factory-fresh airbag... don’t I risk doing more damage removing the collet ?

and any idea why it might not latch ?

am I just not getting it in deep enough ?

will try with a stand-alone airline / valve when it arrives to see

They're OEM Dunlop bags, right?

Well it might leak if- as I said a while ago- if you have a misaligned oring in there, or a damaged collet, or a damaged oring, or some debris.

Popping off the collet isn't a big deal. A couple flat head screwdrivers applied under the collet will do it. Since you've eliminated so many other possibilities, I reckon it's worth having a look under there.

Oh.. the other thing I used to remove the orings when I found my access to the crochet (thanks @tomcat59alan ) needles cut off was a bent paperclip. Straighten out a couple sides of one and then use a pair of pliers to bend the last 4 or so mm at the end into a hook. Works a treat. I don't care about whether they're metal or plastic or whatever because I'll discard the orings after removal anyways, but maybe that's just me.

I wasn't concerned about the o ring,its so the housing isn't scratched. ;)

Yeah.. that's a valid concern, but so for it hasn't been an issue. I think it might be if you went and DUG it out of there, but it's quite easy not to.

My money is that you didnt push it in far enough.
Airline is too short
I would check with a bit of airline as you suggest
 
Needs to be long enough to go all the way in to the sweet spot

Yeah, having trimmed it it’s a wee bit tricksy hitting it all the way home.

nice to know there aren’t any leaks anywhere else in that airline. Just frustrating it’s so bloody fiddly.

I think I need some fine needle-nosed pliers.
 
Sorry but I cannot get my head round you having done lots of work and you own a P38 yet you dont replace the whole line? And make it 3 inches longer

I’m super new to the P38 and just finding my way (so be gentle !). I love that I can work on it but I’m trying to work out what I can and can’t do and don’t want to bite off more than I can chew.

I’ve got 4M of airline coming and, if you’re telling me it’s easy enough to replace the whole line (is there a guide) rhen maybe I should look at doing that.

there are a ton of other projects I need to do over the winter but this (and the cracked exhaust) are the priorities.

Beware of leaking exhausts it can melt the airline.
