Double declutch

I have a 2006 Defender and have been double de clutching of late, only started to see how it was done. I find the changes are better. Are there any disadvantages or issues with continuing?

No issues really, in fact it'll make Hi-Lo or Lo-Hi much easier to do without stopping or slowing too much ..

Good to know for when your 2nd gear synchro starts to go

The thing is you wont know if you are doing it right unless you drive a crash box as every change can be different depending on the circumstances, downshifts are the hardest.

The first trucks i drove you had to learn to double the clutch if you didn't you got no gears. It makes gearboxes that have no synchromesh easier to change gear.

Some of the early fire trucks I drove had crash boxes and you used to get ripped by the crew when you played the box like a musical instrument.

Same as with the Army i remember the saying "It's a gearbox not a juke box" usually followed by a slap.

I find that the gears are going in smoother do have to think about it and listen to the engine and yes downshifts are more difficult to match.

I am currently double de clutching in my new 6 speed defender. It is helping me to change gear smoothly whilst getting used to the new gearbox with the extra gear.

Hell only time you need a clutch is for stop or go all other shifts don't need a clutch. just need to find the sweet spot up of down.

you need to find the sweet spot in the rpms, and it will be smooth as silk. rev the nuts off it and it will revolt

Yes getting the rpms correct does make it a lot smoother. I'm just doing this to slow me down whilst getting used to an extra gear and for a bit of nostalgic practice

Can you go lo to high if you double de clutch? I changed once just normally and given the bang I've never tried it again

I do, clutch and into neutral, clutch and into Hi .. match revs as best you can guess .. Be aware that Lo 5th equates to something between Hi 2nd and 3rd, so changing main gears at the same time works best.

Would neutral main box. Clutch neutral tx box then clutch hi range before clutch selecting a gear in the main box be ok? Long winded but the bang I had last time I changed low to high was horrific. To the point I got out and checked the shafts!

give the throttle a little touch (increase the revs) and you won't need to double clutch
