Door bottoms, Chequer plate... anythoughts?

Hey guys,

The bottoms of my doors and rear wing are looking abit rought so thought these may do for a cheap/quick fix to hide the blemishes

Has anyone else fitted em? if so what are your thoughts?

I used to like the look of them until I realised, after getting my Disco, that they were mostly used for what you want .. hiding the rough bits you can't be arsed to fix properly!! At which point they just become another thin, hard to fettle place to hide more dirt and ****e in while the inner bits you're hiding corrode away even more ...

As such, I don't like them anymore ...

Couldn't have put it better myself.

I was going to ask the same question actually, i was looking at the chequer range for my disco and was wondering if the chequer view was good idea or not. I am going to rub the doors down and filler them up then put the plates on, so is a good idea or not?

good points! is there no way of keeping the water/dirt out?

If they're done well then I think they still look good .. it's just that too often you see them with three pop rivets holding them on and flapping in the wind ..

I'd use some kind of adhesive/sealer, like windscreen adhesive/seal maybe, to stick them to fixed, prepared surfaces, then maybe rivets in the corners and along edges. Makle sure thee's enough sealant used to squeeze out at the edges, thus not allowing any water/****e to get in in the first place ... )

Preparation and fixing of the existing panels is first and most important thing though, I think .

Personally I wouldn't touch the stuff.
If you fix the boor bottoms and paint them, the best you can do is take off the door cards and coat the inside of the door skins along the bottoms with either thick grease or waxoil.
I used thick grease myself and dont have any corrosion.
If you fit chequer plate to a repaired area and need to go back to it getting the chequer plate off without causing damage will be a problem.
I just thinks it makes things worse.

Like Paul D states well prepared and well sealed I think they should last a good while and tart the old girl up haha!

Need to repair me flapping rear quarter panel to mudflap bracket 1st!.... any tips for this?
