I did the same too, with the factory fits i noticed a flappy papery sound when putting too much bass on so i stripped it down to find the flexing ring around the speaker cones had completely perished over time and just flapped around in there so i went to buy some 100 watt replacements and was chuffed to see they had the threaded hole there behind a sticker so i didn't have to contemplate making a new bracket for the amp and find somewhere to fit it too.
i don't know why some people feel the need to fill their hatchback boots with massive bass boxes, my sony head unit puts out 4x52 watts and my speakers are all original sizes yet i can only put the bass on halfway otherwise all the interior fitments start to work loose!......who said size is everything
Although power is important it's also the frequency reponse, most sub amps go from 30 to 200Hz and sub loudspeakers -30 to 900Hz the standard disco sub amp will never handle that frequency range and as for output power from the amp, I don't think there's that much coming out as the standard loudspeakers which are actually mid range are only rated at 30watt max.
Thats why if you want, like me, 'bass' then it's a bass box in the boot and a powerful 200 watt amp under the passenger seat all the remaining loud speakers handle mid range with tweeters the highs.
And nothing is working loose
