For some odd reason my handbrake lever keeps springing back up a couple of notches after I try and release it.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that I spent most of bank holiday weekend up to my floor pan in quicksand down at Bordon.

Having considered the possible cause of the problem I have managed to fix the issue.

I simply have to drive along with my left foot on top of the lever to keep it down and stop the brake warning lights comming on, whilst opperating the clutch pedal with my right foot.

I tell you, it's taken a couple of years, but I recon I've got this Landy thing sussed:D
 
Fun that, cos mine's doing the same thing. Nothing to do with spending the weekend up to my floor pan on salibury plain's.

Don't see the point. The drum has gota have half a kilo of sticky sand in it. The Lever does'nt get tight till about 7 clicks, i.e. vertical:eek:

New pads and springs just arrived in post. Another Saturday under the Landy comming up:D

p.s. If I get my hand onto the cable adjuster, just as it enters the rubber socket thinumy behing the hand brake and give it a wiggle/tug I can pull the treaded adjuster back out of the socket, release the tension and the lever sits at rest. I am assuming it's because the drum is full of crap and the shoes can not return to base when the brake is release, hence not pulling the cable back to rest. Soon find out.

Hey, not dissing your advice dude. Just my logic suggests if I tighten up the cable at the adjuster, it will just pull the handbrake lever higher up as the problem is probably muck in the drum not allowing the shoes to back off and allow the handbrake to fully return to rest.

Is my logic incorrect??
 
Sounds like the springs cant return the shoes, if you get under and give the linkage a tap it'll return ok (hopefully whilst not on a hill otherwise you might get run over) take it all apart and clean the pistons up and the bores, crap in there will prevent them from sliding nice, assemble with some high temp grease and all should be fine.
Oh, might be worth checking/ordering the boot covering the input rod see if you can stop the crap getting in there in the first place.

Cheers fella. I started another thread after cleaning up and replacing the shoes and springs. Looks like I may have a issue with an ageing cable.
 
Found this on LR4x4:

"I had this last year (first time saying that), and it is the hand brake cable getting stuck when the plastic linning sheath becomes knackered.
Change it now, as it will just get stuck on fully soon, and then your in the poo.
Carry a hack saw with you and when it happens cut cable next to drum and it will release.

Prolly time for a new cable then. Not looking forward to pulling the brake apart again to fit a new cable:(
