According to what I've read elsewhere on here, the Td4 version is not all that much slower than the V6, without the K-series worries, and a much better mpg...??

I would imagine where you loose out is 'terminal velocity'

Any truth?

I can't see a TD4 being almost as fast as the V6. 113 bhp against 175bhp, so with 50% more power which will be faster? The KV6 doesn't pop it's head gaskets for no reason so is unlike it's 4 cylinder brother!! The V6 is also the most refined and quietest Freelander 1.
Fuel is a different matter as my V6 averages 20 mpg.

KV6 has similar cavitation and overheating issues.

Which is why they do 125,000 miles + between head gasket changes!! ;) The main reason the re-engineered KV6 pops it's HG is because the thermostat O rings allow the coolant to leak unseen. This causes air to be drawn into the block which causes the liners to heat up very rapidly so popping the HG. This is no different to any wet liner engine. Some KV6 engines have suffered from liner recession but that isn't very common and probably caused by faulty casting of the block.
The KV6 was also PTP's most reliable engine ;)
 
having only had my freelander three days, and the fact that it makes more clunks and knocks and rattles than the vitara of same age that I gave up for it, I absolutly love it, my wife hates it, so gave her the vitara for when she passes her test, she says its a poor mans land rover, and that I should have bought a disco, but Im not listening, the roof comes off, it'll be great for lamping, I LOVE IT (may correct that statement if and when it breaks down)
 
I love my freelander, I dont regret buying it but I do want a defender.

My only complaint with it is fuel economy... getting a measly 25-30MPG out of it, compared to my last car which did about 55-60MPG! I begrudge having to fill up twice as often!

You are lucky at 25-30 mpg! I average 20 mpg on a normal week :(
I'd still have it though.

Yeah city driving its TERRIBLE but thankfully I mostly do motorway miles, I make the missus drive me around town to waste her petrol! :D

Was still a bit of a shock to the system, I knew the MPG wouldnt be great, but after a few years of 50+ MPG... yeah... ouch...

Did a recent trip around Exmoor this week... £25 of petrol got me about 105 miles...:eek: admittedly there were a lot of steep hills I had to floor it up in 1st gear which didnt help... but that still sucks!

My wife has an Astra GTC which does 45- 50 mpg so by comparison my 20mpg V6 Freelander is thirsty. Lucily I only average 90 miles a week so it's not a problem. If I did the 300 miles a week the wife does I'd not use my Freelander!
 
No, it's great. It was cheap to buy and is cheap to run - it drives nicely (bit noisy on the motorway- but passable - and probably quieter than an Audi TT), very torquey for a little diesel, it's a little Landy I can throw around locally - loves it off road, tows, carried..cracking little motor - saves bashing the RR on short runs too. Great in the winter and summer, sunroof, rear window and aircon..lovely! Bits seem to break weekly - and certainly monthly (Ebay is my friend), but on the whole it's been fine. (I don't think many Freebie haters - and indeed L series haters have ever driven one..).
 
When I got it 2 years ago and it went wrong almost straight away costing me £400 yes I did, but since then it's been perfect so no
 
i bought an early L series as a bit more reliable and being honest the engine is the only thing i havnt had problems with just wish i bought a rot box disco now as defenders not suitable for me yet having 3 kids and 2 in car seats
 
Bought the best I could at the time and have fixed some of the common faults.

Still a few left to sort and may regret buying it more if I can't get the faulty injector out on Friday…

Probably wouldn't buy another as I'll have no money left:rolleyes:
 
No , well not so far 120,000 2001 1.8 K series , VCU is still usable , it does tip runs , car boot and general "moving stuff" well enough at about 30mpg. Already have HG set etc in stock and a lot more room around the engine than in a MG so not too scared there !

Looking forward to a bit of green laning - nothing too testing round here and a snowy winter :D
 
At coming up to 3 years, the Freelander is quickly becoming the car I've owned the longest (in 13 years of driving).

I've been saying I'll get rid of it for a nice new FL2 or Disco 4 for about 18 months, but I can't justify spending more money when my FL does nothing wrong.

As an all weather car, I think they are unbeatable.
 
We purchased our 51 plate auto GS diesel 5 door 6 months ago. When we collected her she had a full service history and all previous MOT's. With only 64K genuine miles recorded. The wife absolutely loves it and keeps singing it's praises. It tows our Lunar Lexon SB which weighs 1.4 tons fully loaded with ease, up Keele bank on the M6 in top. It averages 25 MPG towing and high 30's solo. We had a full service done on her and the gearbox oil changed at our local independent land rover specialist in Preston. Two faults since purchase, camshaft sensor and a leaky fuel pipe. We have done 6K since ownership. My opinion of this motor is that it does everything asked of it in comfort and after sorting the inherited faults willingly. Did a round trip of 369 miles in her and still felt very relaxed at the end of the journey. Would I buy another?, not while this one is ticking all the boxes.
 
I would still have one even though mines been off the road than on (and that's not off road) I would love another one as a project but still haven't got the money due to the first one.
