Do it yourself alloy refurb!

looking for some advice on painting my boost alloys on my 90. There looking bit tired and pitted in places. Has anybody had any experience at doing this?

They will need a good sand down first, but what sort of primer and paint should I use, are any rattle can types any good?

Ive had a quote for £60 per alloy for a full refurb but I look doing the jobs myself so wondered if this was something I could take a go at myself?

I've done a few sets.

What you want is a wire brush attachment and a flapwheel attachment for a drill to get the worst of the pitting and kerbage out.

Then give them a coat of acid etch primer, then a coat of normal primer,, give it a flatting off then a 2-3 coats of colour.

Another option is getting them powder coated. Google city powder coaters in brum. They do it or £20 a wheel apparently which includes acid dip, sand blast and powder coat.

Nice one thats helpful, alot of things I've read tell you to steer well away from having a go yourself but then other people talk of good results, I'm not expecting the results to last for years but Id like to have a go.

Any particular types of paints? I want to go with a matt black, just not sure on which brands to try?

The main thing is using an acid etch primer to get a good bond with the wheel. What you use above that is irrelevant to a degree. I have used paints from Halfords (own brand) and Wilko (Plasticote I think it was). As with anything paint wise take time with the prep to get a good finish. The spraying takes a few minutes and is the easy bit.

I have turned some right states into very smart looking sets of wheels. Use small sections of masking tape 1-1.5" long to mask round the tyres then cover with news paper.
