DIY land anchors

I'm thinking of making my own land anchor. Something simple lightweight and easy to carry.

I'm going to use some 100x100x8 angle with a big hammer plate on top and eyelets to pull it back out

Anyone else made there own? If so, what design did they use? And more to the point, was it fit for purpose?

Depends a lot on what it is going in to. With the angle and hammer plates I assume you are talking about the type that is 3 posts tied together rather than the 'ship anchor' style ones?

Just one angle that is sledge hammered into the ground basically. I think there might be too much resistance when sledging

Speak to 300tdistu.

He makes um, he might tell you what works and dosent. Or just copy the big boys like gigglepin and X eng.

Im sure they tried and failed a few times.

You could copy mine, it folds up into a bag.

I've bin doing some googling about this, I'd want to make an anchor type one, I asked tdistu for the intentions but he never replied as I was gona buy one of his if I could store it easy,

ive just got rid ov 1 with my land rover.its hard to explain how it was made.it was 2 bits of u shaped angle iron with a hole drilled thru at the end where a big d link went thru and held them together.then the was 4 triangles cut into the flat of the u section where some home made spikes went to anchoring it down.u layed them flat in a v shape then put the d link thru the hole joining them at the end then banged the spikes thru the holes

I'v done a lot of testing with different metal box/tube of differant sizes, even some angle iron to find the best and strongest way to make them,#
In my testing I found that....
Tube is nicer to hold on to and throw over your Shoulder to get up muddy banks.
the most important part of a good ground anchor is that piece of flat bar thats sits across the bent tube. Its that doing the actual pulling and all force go through that.
When testing what angles to set the plough i found that shallow angles are better for loose or soft ground and steep angles for clay.

Those things really do scare me after seeing one shoot out and through a defender front screen and then tangling itself within the mesh dog guard in the vehicle!
