Hi - I am/was the proud owner of a 54 plate Discovery 3 that had a main dealer service 105,000 last week including cam belt change etc. Less than 48 hours later and driving down the A3 to Portsmouth to catch a ferry for half term holiday the water pump came off and bounced around the engine at 70 mph. No assistance at all from the Land Rover Main Dealer than serviced the car!! Please let me know of a qualified and experienced Land Rover inspector who can undertake a damage examination before the main dealer get their hands on it. Also would be good to know if others have experienced this and what damage the loose water pump/pulley did. Thanks so much.

Hi Nathan - Sorry for the late response but been tackling the Land Rover Main Dealer network!!

Bought the car from Cuffley Motors in Hertfordshire more than two years ago but have had it serviced etc at a main dealer - which I thought was an investment in safety!!:(

Hello - Apparently the top bolt that holds the water pump is missing and the other two lower bolts have sheared off because of the extra pressure on them. LR are stating that their technician would not have touched the water pump bolts as the aux belt is self tensioning and the technician would have focussed on the pulley. However, if the top bolt was missing at the service then surely the technician should have noticed this as its a pretty major bolt to just disappear!! Needless to say LR are NOT admitting liability and I can feel myself getting closer to legal action. Any advice most welcome.

I'd be back on the phone to them and explain that they repair your vehicle or you will take them to court. Seems the mechanic hasn't put the 3rd bolt in hence the pressure on the water pump causing it to shear off.

Thank you - The tensioner bit of info is very interesting and I am now trying to find out if they changed the tensioner - in which case I understand they then HAVE to loosen/remove the three water pump bolts.... The service manager and master technician are adament they do not have to touch the 3 water pump bolts to complete the 105,000 service plus front and back belt changes? Either way I would expect an experienced technician to notice that water pump bolts are missing as it was probably no more than inches away from where he was working to change the aux belt.

Seeing as the w/pump is attached to the timing cover and the belt is behind the cover, it is bit impossible really isn't it not to remove it ;) good luck x show him the photos on your phone and ask him what he had to say about that !!

yes as it holds or look like it hold the idler Pully sorry mrs rice I only flicked through earler the water pump is still attached but the top bolt is removed , apart from that it is plain and simple to of had an advisory at the sheer minimum with the work that was carried out if the Technician missed that then he is blind

Dear Mad Hat Man - Thank you so much for your input. The missing bolt that Land Rover are referring to is (on the above picture) at 2 o'clock (location wise) from the top of the blue seal and I believe anchors the water pump. There are 3 strategically based bolts and it is the only one at the top (the others being beneather and to the left and right) It is visible in the above picture. Any further light you can shed is most welcome. Thank you.
