My winch has developed a problem, when I press the button (in or out) it just clicks and doesn't do anything. After a few clicks I started to get some smoke out of the isolation switch - I'm pretty confident it's wired up correctly, perhaps a bad connection inside the little control box. Any ideas?

These are the wires - there are 3 cables going to the earth. 2 from inside the control box (one fat, one thin) and one from the battery.

I toyed around with various ideas to mount a camera to record off-roading. I wanted it to be set back in the cab around head height so that it gave you perspective on inclines, declines etc.

I finally changed the gearbox oil, it made a bit off a mess - I wasn't expecting it to be so runny! I did manage to get most of it inside the oil drain pan.

The Disco was in the garage this week to have the timing belt done.

Today I cracked on with a few bits, as tomorrow I'm taking it off-roading.

Fixed the winch, it was caused by a bad earth but all good now!

I have oil leaking out of one of my hubs, I suspected a blocked breather to took it off to take a look.

Breather was definitely blocked, and it appears that the previous owner fitted a very DIY breather kit - i've ordered a replacement one that should come in the week.

I fitted my hi-lift jack in the rear floor using some hi-lift jack mounts, that way it won't get too dirty or wet.

I also finally got round to painting the chequer plate on the bonnet black, so no the only silver chequer plate left is on the rear 1/4 but I want to remove it like I did on the other side.

Cleaned out the breather

This is the setup that it currently has, not very sophisticated. But I've made sure none of them are blocked now.

Unfortunately off-roading was canceled today due to the site being double booked for a different event.

Instead here are a couple of progress pictures.

How I bought it vs now.

Your Discovery 1 300 TDi is looking fantastic, I really like your choice of modifications!

In fact a lot of what you are doing is what I am planning with mine, so don't accuse me of copying! Actually you can, I don't care, I'm still doing it how I want it!!

When you getting out to play now? GET VIDYOS AND PICS!

Thanks I appreciate the feedback!

Haha, no problem - If what I'm doing gives you ideas for yours then that's great!

I was meant to go last Sunday, but it was cancelled due to the site being double booked - probably won't go for another couple of weeks now.

The Discovery was overheating - I think it was caused by an airlock, as on the top of the thermostat housing the wrong bolt is present. It was also leaking a lot of water from there.

5zO3RZ4l.jpg

So I bought a replacement thermostat housing and thought it would take me about 45 minutes to change it over. How i was wrong...

The last bolt snapped in the head, and to me that's just game over. Luckily my dad is a mechanic and he cam to the rescue. Drilled out the old bolt and used a helicoil for the replacement - I didn't take any pictures of the process sadly.

Here is the snapped bolt, though.

Proper old skool mechanicing! Can't do that today unless the computer has a "drill and helicoil" option :D:D:D

Rad could be choked or fecked ...

Water is not circulating correctly ...

Maybe the rad has seen better days.

But I took the rad off and cleaned it out earlier, was full of filthy water but it is flowing freely now.

Hopefully after cleaning everything out and flushing the system it will be ok.

Look at the price for getting your rad re-cored as opposed to a new one ... some of the Chinese one are pants ...

Are the aluminium / plastic ones from of the bay the ones you mean? I have bought 2 so far but not used in anger.

Nice thread. Looking to do a body lift at some point as well.
How did you fit your rear bumper? Did you had to modify the chassis? Front is quite easy with just the holes moved.

Cheers.

I don't think I have any pictures - but the rear bumper is just held on by 2 bolts, i used some metal plate with 2 holes drilled 2 inches apart and just bolted it back on so it sat 2 inches higher.

If you want to have any tow anchor points on the rear bumper then you'll need something more heavy duty. But my tow points are on the tank guard.

I'll try and remember to take some pictures tomorrow.

I was just about to post an update! :)

My Disco is a bit poorly, actually!

Last weekend I towed my dads caravan to Folkestone, for the War and Peace show.

A couple of miles from the show, I heard a load hissing noise, so I pulled on to the hard shoulder to have a better look. The bottom of the header tank was spraying out all of my water - the bottom of the header tank had cracked.

Ofz3Ddsl.jpg

ZS9WZzYl.jpg

So I replace that with new one.

Then a couple of days later the power steering pump started making a funny noise. Took it off and there was loads of play in the shaft. So I sourced another one and fitted that.

7mWTeMpl.jpg

I drove home today, and after I got home I let the engine cool a bit and opened the header tank to check the level (as it had gone down last time I had checked). I loosened the cap with a large rag and the coolant came boiling out, and emptied itself.

Temp gauge hasn't gone past half way any of those times.

I've raised a thread HERE

So yeah, it's a bit broken!

Anyway, couple of pics of the show for anyone interested - didn't take many since i've been going there years now.

I did actually go off-roading, as they have an off-road course there too. I forgot to take any pictures, but I got very stuck - which is why there is so much mud thrown up my Disco!
