Bollix! Low range remains the same! If your offroad driving in High then the terrain isn't that bad or your limiting your available control of your vehicle!


I had a disco transfer box and genuinly 37 inch diameter tyres and I agree 1st and 5th were useless. I believe with a normal size tyre say 750 R16 or anything upto 33 inch GENUINE measured tyre diameter it will transform your vehicle. Another thing to consider is weight though. I have towed an arrows trailer and my all up weight train weight was in excess of 3.5 Tonnes on the above setup. It was awful but It managed it without slipping the clutch LR's has a 2 speed transfer box use it!

Do a test get on the motorway get up to 65mph note the noise levels and revs? If you have a rev counter. fit the disco box and if your vehicle is 100 percent good and your not running massive tyres nor weigh in next to the titanic you will be more than happy with the upgrade.

P.s my 90 is 200tdi disco engine convertion and was way long due a service when I towed that stupidly heavy trailer.

IF the TD is in good nick fit a TDI intercoler this will lower intake temp and reduce overall heat which will improve things for reliability and performance. Don't expect it to be a rocket ship but it will man your engine if good stands a chance of staying good. I believe it will be ok dependant on tyre size?

I'm interested in the difference of a 200Tdi Defender engine and a Disco TB. Atm i'm running the standard GB & TB from the 19J set up, as both 200Tdi ( Disco & Def ) are identical, i assume it's the same regardless of whether a Disco or Def engine is fitted ( 200Tdi)??

defender box lower geared but only in hi gear, standard wheels disco box give's better cruising.

I've run several 200tdi discos with 265/75/16 tyres. They don't have a problem with this even when towing heavy trailers. Therefore a defender running a disco transfer box with 265 or 235/85 tyres will be the same. If you run stupidly big tyres then things will be different obviously but then if you've got massive tyres on why put a disco tranny box on in the first place?
