Got a silly question... what are the symptoms of broken spring?

I my disco I can open the door from inside but not outside, when I try open the door from outside it feels like something slipping off the opening mechanism. it this due to the broken spring? or is there another solution for that?

The spring only affects the locking mechanism, tell tale sign is the lock-knob lifting half way then dropping again (overcome by using the key and holding in the unlock position from outside or holding up the knob on the inside of the car)

Follow the first few steps of the how-to and you'll be able to see all the bits moving - I'm sure you'll see whats happening!

Its not so much that the window glass is in the way more that the glass runner/guide is in front of the lock, how do you get the lock out from behind it or can you somehow move the guide to allow more space?
I have got the lock out but getting a new one back in might be a problem:(

Ah ok I have the above problem as well, all my doors lock and unlock without any issues.
But my O/S/R door only opens from the inside and the N/S/R door only opens if you pull both the inner and outer handle at the same time!

I'm a little confused now.
Chris.

I think I missed any reference to the spring part number and/or source. I read everything twice just in case I missed that. Nice write up otherwise!

Just done my rear tailgate using the instructions on here and a spring ordered on eBay.

Works a treat. :D

Gives you an immense feeling of satisfaction when you manage to remember where all the rods go and it finally works! It should be sold as a puzzle!

I thought I'd say thanks.
I used this to do the rear lock Very good thanks very much.
I had a go at the front driver side door and its worth noting that on the old '95 dico you don't have to lift the window glass. just leave the window in the UP position and then remove the 5 bolts for the window frame (one in door jamb, torx, one under wing mirror, one on lock face and two at the bottom of the rails in the base of the door) remove the mirrow and disconnect the wiring and carefully lift the window FRAME straight up about 12 inches. BE VERY CAREFUL with the frame in this position the DOOR will not shut without servere damage to the frame and paintwork
Otherwise Works a treat.
Thanks very much

Penetrating oil like WD40 or GT85 from Machine Mart.

Cut a big U out of the underside of the plastic cover of the door-handle, and this will let your thumb in to push the metal handle forward to make the latch work.

Remember to turn the LandRover oval badge upside down, as that is a secret sign you are in LandyZone.

Hi, replacing front passenger door spring. Got the window frame lifted and lock screws and bolt out. Struggling with the separating the rods - they seem seized on the clip and a bit worried about bending the rods with force trying to release them. I've WD'd it all today so will have another go tomorrow, but wondered if anyone had same problem / advice ?

thanks :)

Hi all

anyone got a picture of where the spring goes on the rear door?

I have it all stripped ready to pull the latch out but there are no bits of spring etc to give me a hint as to where the new spring goes.

many thanks

dave

Do not bend any rods. It's not needed and you'll hate yourself in the morning.

Detaching the clips is a matter of rotating them from the rod ends. You'll see in photos on page one of this thread a couple different methods of pushing them off the rods: screw driver; a tough finger. The tight work area makes it more difficult so it's really a one hand effort. You can do it though. We all have.

One last heads up. DON'T DROP THE CLIPS into the door. I did this and it required making a fishing wire with a hook to get it un-wedged from the tight/dark/can't see depths of the inner door. :frusty:

My Dicovery n/s front door had a snapped outer handle when I got it, leaving it possible to open from the inside only. On saturday I fitted a new handle and it was working fine. Then a couple of hours later it wouldnt open from the inside or outside. It feels like the door is locked when you pull either handle. I have managed to get the door open after about 45 minutes fumbling about in the dark tonight after work with only a mobile phone for light as my torch is flat . Not had a look at the latch yet, its just sat on the bench in my garage, but after reading this I think it could be the problem. Top guide :D
