Good morning guys, I have a question. Can anybody confirm, to get pressure at the fuel rail you need:
1. Low pressure feed to HPFP, circa 7 psi
2. The engine cranking
3. Pressure control valve closed
4. Volume control valve open
5. HPFP turning and in good order
If these conditions are met you should get at least 200 bar at the fuel rail.

I’m still not getting rail pressure. I’ve started with the easy stuff:
1,2 and 3 checked and satisfied
Item 4 is my next check. I am going to check the voltage going to the valve. If this is correct I’m going to remove the Volume Control Valve and check it’s working.
If that looks ok I will need to move onto the pump. I’ll check the belt is ok, if it is I will need to remove the pump. I’ll probably send it to Darwen Diesels to test and repair.

Does this sound right?

Hi

May i ask have u checked ur fuel filter first

What engine , year is ur D4 plse, Auto/ manual

Due to there complexity I would also get the codes read to see what fault codes come up

If you take a peak at the D3/4 forum and search for robbies guide to the low pressure fuel system theres some very good tests to carry out.

Hi yes I have checked the oil filter. The disco is 2009 and it’s an auto. The main fault code relates to the Switch Illumination shorted to ground.

Hi lynall I have checked through Robbie’s guide and I get low pressure at 7 psi, which he says should be enough. I checked the connectors going to the hpfp metering valve and it shows 12.7 volts on one terminal and 3.5 volts on the other. With my message saying one of the circuits has shorted to ground, I wondered whether this was having an affect.

Hi

Many thks, What codes did u get please, might be able to do a search and find something that may help

Does sound like a cable has shorted itself out , maybe on the engine or bad pin connection

Know they can be challenging when trying to find a fault , lol

Hi gstuart,

The codes are:
BCM-Body Control
  • U2010-11 (2F) Switch illumination - General electrical failure - circuit short to ground
  • U1000-00 (2F) Solid state driver protection activated - Driver disabled
  • U3000-49 (2F) Control module - System internal failure - internal electronic failure
HVAC-Ventilation
  • B11FF-84 (2F) Air conditioning refrigerant pressure - Bus signal/message failure - signal is below allowable range
RLM-Suspension
  • C1A71-1C (AF) Rear right height sensor supply - General electrical failure - circuit voltage out of range
It’s the U2010-11 that I’m am really struggling with.

Hi

U codes can normally be ignored , however it’s strange that it’s not starting , know the guys on the D3 forum are very experienced , have u tried asking there plse

Air con fault code reqs regassing and the height sensor there is a connector plug passenger side by the back wheel , can sometimes have a bad connection or wire has rubbed against the chassis , enclosed some pics

May i ask have u gone through all the fuses plse , imagine you’ve already done that

Know on the D4 the HPFP belt is timed , D3 isn’t

Also trying to think if there’s a cut out switch on these, alas mines a D3 so apologises don’t know how much they differ

Does the red alarm light stop when u open the vehicle

Know that’s not much help to u , will do a search to see if anything new comes to light for u

Just a thought

Have u tried clearing the codes , turning the engine over and seeing if any new codes come up plse

Also was ur fuel filter a genuine one , thks

Have u tried starting it with all ur keys , just pondering if possible a faulty transponder ????
