Disco 1 front wheel bearings

Problems getting the brakes to work properly may be due to worn front wheel bearings (1992 Disco 1 with 103,000 miles on the clock) - see earlier thread about my brake problems.

How can I tell if the bearings need to be changed? I have not noticed any extra bearing noise or felt any vibrations. Are there any things to watch out for?

jack the car up so the wheel is off the ground, grab the wheel top and bottom and rock it, there should be no play, if there is you can adjust it rather than replace
