Hi there all. i have read these forums like a little book worm most of last week and i hope you will be able to help me.

My Td4 did not want to start last friday.the engine would just crank and not start, i replaced the rear diesl pump and the front high pressure pump because it seemed there was no diesel going into the engine.

The car started, drove a few kilos and then the positive conector on the battery came loose, car stalled and stopped. has not come on since then...saturday morning.

Now if i crank the car a few times for more than 7 seconds or so, the battery discharges... i take the battery out, put it into my rover 75, start the rover....take out the battery, put it back into the landy and it will crank a few times and then discharge....no more cranking.

i checked the diesel cut off switch and it is not popped. i don't know. can it be the starter? is this just because lewis crashed out of monaco? why is this happenign to me...:eek:

I don't wanna tow the car all the way to Bosch only to find out it is some earthing problem or some other silly think the mechanic overlooked and cannot pick out
 
First of all if the battery was drained then u have to reformat it.......put a charger on and leave it the whole night(at least 12 hours) unless your battery is not old enough to replace it.
 
Battery is not old.
The Battery in the Rover is new. The battery in the freelander is a few months old. i took it for a trickle charge sunday(yesterday) and this morning still no luck.

The battery seems to discharge or the car looses all connection to the battery after 2 crankings.

If i take that battery from the Freelander into the Rover, the rover will start and if i take the battery back to the freelander it will cranck again once or twice before all is lost.

I can swop the batteries back and forth all day but the freelander will always kill the battery after 2 crankings and will not start.

I was sure it was the diesel pumps, they checked the pumps and said there was no diesel going to engine, they replaced the front one, no luck, replaced the rear one, car drove for a bout 20 minutes then the loose battery terminal came loose and the car refused to start since saturday!:doh:
It just cranks as if it will catch and start but then nothing.
 
well if both the battery's will start the r75 then it is not the batts at fault,i would get your starter motor checked as a first option,or at least check all the battery leads and connections to the s/motor,including all the earthing points.
 
I guess this means towing the car to the auto electrician today then..... was dreading this. thanks a lot for all advice hey, will let you know in a day or two if all is ok
 
Check the wiring loom,there might be a loose connection to the fuel pump.Have you checked all fuses and earth connections ?
It could be many other things but I am not a mechanic and only have half a clue.
 
You are not a mechanic but at least you know what a loom is, 1990 LucasArts released a game called loom, that is how much i know.:confused:

I will check cables tonight and as for earthings i will see if any wires have come loose. i am at work, so tonight i will see whati can do. All fuses are still alive, tested with the light thingie and all were still alive.

i was thinking of starting the rover75 tonight, connecting the jumper cables to the freelander terminals and battery, then trying to crank the freelander and see if it will drain both the freelander battery and the rover75 battery or if by some miracle chance it will catch. like jump starting it but without chance of it killing its own battery.

be very very carefull if you are going to jump start one car from another,like i said earlier,check all leads inc earths from bat to s/motor.if they are ok then at least you have ruled this out.ps where abouts are you,it would help if you stated this as there might be someone near you who might be able to help you.
 
Gemsdad, i am so far away, the nearest i will be closest to you is on Thursday when Juan Leaves South Africa to visit the UK office for a month.
I am in South Africa, the nearest thing to me is towing the Car to Bosch or Landrover (pay and arm and a leg and half an eye). unless i can find an auto electrician before i knock off to come over today.

Wulf said i should check the wiring loom as well..... the only loom i know is a computer game from back in the day. but i will double check cables and see if i can spot anything out of the ordinary before my electrifying jump starting adventure tonight
 
I started by trying out the injector test, because the car would just not crank, then the mechanic guy said it was definately the pumps.....

if i don't blow both my cars tonight i will let you guys know:)

when you say the batt goes flat after only a couple of goes,does it not crank over at all,or does it carry on cranking but just will not start???.
 
Ok, i recharge battery by runningit a few minutes on the r75.
then put it on the freelander. the freelander will crank once or twice at most if i try to crank it 3rd time, it will seem like batter is dead, no cranking just the clack clack sound

by crancking i mean it will go vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr but not start at all.

I suppose your Rover is diesel too and the batteries on both cars have similar power do they?
 
SierraFerry the batteries are not the same, one is just a little bit smaller than the other.
The r75 is not diesel, but a v6 petrol

the battery will be alive for a crancking or two on the freelander before it seems to be completely sucked dry, the rover will start one go on the same battery without stress. Wulf and Gems dad have ruled out the batteries as fault, and so i am lost in the loom of electric what what and the starter as possible cause of all the stress. i resorted to using just one battery anyways, putting it on the freelander, trying, killing it, putting it in the r75, idling for a while, then putting it on the freelander for another try.... just vrrrrrrrrrrrrr no vrooooooooem and then clank clank
 
both batteries make no difference, the r75 smallish one or the original willard bigger one, it dies after cranking
 
This is going to sound really stupid and probably unbelievable but I'm gonna suggest it anyway.

Had a renualt trafic diesel van a couple of years ago, one day it just wouldn't start cranked a few times until the battery gave in. so went out bought a new battery, had the starter motor tested and refurbished. didn't touch the diesel pump but did clean all the terminals on the starter motor, alternator and battery aswell as earthing points on the engine and chassis. Fecker still wouldn't start.

Well couple of days after sitting out under the bonnet cursing and screaming me neighbour came out and took out the glow plugs, couldn't see much wrong with them but went up and bought a new set,Whilst changing them compared the old with the new and the old ones were around 1/4" shorter than the new ones so put them in and the bastid started.

So gonna suggest it, Try taking out one of ya glow plugs and checking for any damage or wear, replace them and see if it helps.

Glow plugs? i guess they are like spark plugs for petrol cars? will check tonight.

Yes the car cranks the engine over VRRRRRRRR but no VROEM at the endof it. only a few times through, not more than 7 seconds, never more than twice, the battery will be off then

Car just died. No noise and gave gearbox issue. After researching, I ordered two new batteries as the other ones were dead. Now cranks but no start.
