The dif on my series 2 has basically sheared off all the bolts holding the crown wheel on. I ordered some 3/8 BSF bolts from Dingocroft and the original bolts were black colour (High Tensile Steel?), the new bolts that I have look like a standard steel that is 3/8 BSF.

My question is does it really matter what type of bolts that I use inside the rear diff?

Also what torque would these bolts have to be to struggling to find it.

Are the replacement bolts silver coloured? If so they are most likely zinc plated.

As far as I know, zinc plated bolts should not be used where they will be submerged in oil as this can cause the zinc to flake off.

Un-plated black bolts, known as "self coloured" should be used in these situations. For example, you should not use plated bolts inside an engine.
 
same thing happened to my s3 a few months back. I got replacement black bolts from Ashcroft transmissions.

haven't drilled out the remains of the old bolts yet though :D did get a used diff to get the truck back on the road quickly
