Diff / rear poleshaft problem - i think!!

Hope someone can help. (1972 Series 3, petrol)
Set off in first gear, went about 5 foot, heard a bang, found that when i accellerated there was nothing

came to a rolling stop, popped it into reverse - no movement. It will move in 4 wheel drive only.
Any ideas what the problem may be?

Is it a half shaft?

Put it in 4Wd see if it drives then

If so put the handbrake on and jack up one rear wheel and see if you can turn it.

sounds like a rear half shaft. You should not drive until fixed in case some debris gets in the differential - which will make a right mess.

Easy to fix if you get all the bits out.

The problem is that the rear half shafts are not really of adequate section for the torque available so they can snap. A reason why later Series land rovers in teh army had Salisbury axles I think.

Thanks Guys for the advice, It will drive in 4 wheel, can't jack it up only a feeble woman and knowing my luck id get it wrong

have not been driving him, been walking / thumbing lifts (i live in a remote area). He is going to be towed tomorrow

to a mechanic , now i can throw some light on where the problem may be.
What make would be the best replacement part? (if it is the poleshaft) Where is the best place to source parts?
(ive only had Ray the landie for 2 months, so i am very new to all this)

if u r new to landys like myself and u r on the net as u clearly r i have found paddocks to be a good starting point easy to use web site good prices and prompt delivery also some of the people on here are not only good with there advice but may have the bits u want and will be willing to get u sorted

Quick Lesson. The shaft running from the gearbox to the differential (the one you can see) is called the propshaft, the two that run from the diff to the wheels, inside the axle casing where you can't see them, and half shafts. Hopefully they are what has gone (only one of them) although if it was a loud bang prepare for the worst.
It you go to a garage talking about a poleshaft they will be rubbing their hands together thinking "We have a right one here, we can con her out of hundreds."
You need to make them think you know what you're talking about, even if you don't!

its a halfshaft, if yer go asking fer a poleshaft , all yule get is funny looks.

he he oops cant seem to get me shafts right!!!

THanks everyone for the advice and the wee lesson- thankfully he wont be going to a ruthless mechanic, (he is not going to charge me to take him apart to have a look) only fitting the part/s.

Paddocks are really helpful I find. I've had no problems with them at all and the prices are reasonable too.

Did you have a look under it? I could simply be its dropped the propshaft.

In which case if your lucky you might get away with a UJ, however if it dropped it, its probably badly damaged so a new prop will be needed.

If its not that then at least you tried the simple things first.

For parts I would say Craddocks, they are probabaly one of the best, paddocks are good but I found they don't have as big a stock when it comes to all the little bits and pieces and a lot of their parts are not the best of quality.

Hey,
Its the l/h rear half shaft........phew!

I wiggled under had a good gawp around at all its bits n bobs - very interesting experience.

trying to source the part without the postage being just as much as the part.

Diff / rear poleshaft problem - i think!!
