Hi everyone wonder if anyone could help, got a discovery 2 ,which I think the diff is locked in,it's not a manual diff it's the electrical type, any suggestions how I can unfree it?thank uou

Hello,

The D2 as far as I know only came with a mechanical center diff lock ( lever in cab, combined with the low / hi lever. ), and this was not fitted to all the vehicles as they come with TC fitted.

What exactly is yours doing? Why do you think the diff is locked?

Cheers

Hi thanks for reply,I did some research too and some came with lever, then landrover introduced the traction control ,its started to turn like a plane, and when you watch it on gravel you can visually see that it's fighting itself?i could may well
Be wrong ,on tight lock sometimes it bangs,?cheers

Not exactly right , D2 had TC, some had combined TC and diff lock. But this is a center diff lock, if the diff is not working on one axle then I suspect your diff in the axle is fubarred.

Does the TC light come on on the dash when this is happening?

Unless someone has retrofitted a lockable diff to the axle? Is there a switch in the cabin for a lockable diff?

How long have you had this vehicle?

Cheers

I have all three lights on,tc,abs, hill decent, which I thought could be part of the problem?ive had it about 18 months?

Right , so you have the 3 amigos......

You need to get it on diagnostics, find someone locally who has a nanocom / hawkeye / lynx.

Then fix whatever is causing the 3 amigos.

So, why do you think you have an electronic diff lock?

Cheers

Yes,and srs,it's only my farm vehicle but i don't want it knackering up?well I thought/read that if there is no manual lever then it's a electric diff ?i don't understand how an electric
Diff works with the traction control?would the three amigos cause the diff to
Lock in? Many thanks for your help'

Okey dokey,

The diff lock if fitted is only for the ctr diff, NOT the axle diffs. It is actuated by the lever in front of the gearstick

The TC if is is working will make a loud noise ( like a grinding or the ABS cutting in )

D2's do not come with an electronic diff as std or an option.

D2's do not come with an axle diff lock , unless it has been fitted by a third party afterwards.

Cheers

I get so confused,so what would you say this is?is it knackered?if I have no manual lever with diff then I'm confused?Sorry but diffs and stuff completely throws me ,why would this bang on tight turning?

@neilly What was the outcome of this?
@Commercial The Disco 2 was delivered as standard usually with either the electronic Traction Control or manual Centre Diff Lock but in some cases both. The first way to check if you have a manual CDL is to check if the Hi/Lo transfer box lever can be moved from side to side. If it can, then moving it to the left will engage the CDL and pulling it back to the right will disengage it.
If the lever doesn't move sideways (front and back is another function) then you probably don't have the manual CDL, but the best thing to do is get underneath to see if the linkage is present. If you reach up on top of the transfer box, at the front, just above the front prop shaft output flange there might be a small spigot. If there's no spigot then there's no CDL. If there is a spigot then there workings are present inside the transfer box. If there is some sort of linkage connected to the little spigot then the selector system is probably seized. I would reckon that you won't find any linkage.
Neither the front nor rear axles are fitted with diff lockers, either electric or air operated as standard.
I would be interested as to where the "banging" you refer to is coming from and what conditions.
Has anything been done about the "3 amigos" yet?

@brian47

Spoke to him by phone, offered to go and have a look over the axle, wheels , etc and run diagnostics over it. He went on to explain there was a knock when reversing into a corner. Explained the diff lock not being on the rear diff, only center diff and that he could jack it up and see if the rear axle rotated ok, check wheel bearing etc.Quite probably see what is causing the knock and potentially the 3 amigos. Which he was going to try and do that night.

Last I heard was that he was going to call me the following morning to let me know when I could go over ( only 12 miles away ) and run the diagnostics over it and offer any further advice on what the issue might be.
Never heard anything back, So assume he has found something and is fixing it.

Cheers
