Hi

Im doing the CV joints on me Landrover and after Ive cleaned all the mud off the front axel I notice that the diff pan has taken a hell of a whack at some time and sombodys chicken **** welded to repair it resulting in the oil leaking from the weld. So has anyone welded a new diff pan to their axel? And if they have does it get too hot for the seals in the axel?

Cheers
Chris

It can be done with a MIG, but it's difficult, because there's a lot of work involved grinding off the old pan (without filling the diff with swarf). Then, welding is hard - the pan is thin sheet and the axle is thick cast, so the pan tends to warp / blow.
My local Indy specialist tacks the new pan in place in a few places, then seals the seam with JB Weld. He's done dozens like that and never had a problem or complaint (so he says). Mine was done that way about a year ago and it looks good so far.
