Whats the engine and box out of (sorry if you've mentioned it before)? Never seen one of them :)

Well samc88, my profile picture will give you a clue!

A London Taxi!

The motor is the 2.5N/A with a Sherpa timing case, the gearbox is a BorgWarner BW40.

Almost ready to stick this monster back in.

Thanks to everyone for their help - let's hope it runs!

It looks great! I would expect a decent 2.5 will be able to scoot the cab along quite rapidly, given that they can propel a 110 landy to 60mph without a bother.
Obviously, it will need a bit of turning over to get the fuel system primed before it fires.

Thanks for the warning! According to the handbook, there are 4 bleed points do deal with.
Before the rebuild I could get 65mph, and the max speed is quoted as 70mph - I was just dripping a lot of oil, which with the new seals should be better!
Will be putting the motor back in tomorrow all being well.

Fuel system bled - started within 20 seconds!
But damn is there a lot of white/light grey smoke coming out of this monster!
Set the garage smoke alarm off twice!

Any suggestions on what to check/adjust?

i cant remember how far rebuild went but if its had new rings etc it may need some hard work to run in and no idling

New gaskets top, bottom and rear. New seals (head tightened to 30NM, then 60NM, then 90NM and finally 130NM), new cam shaft, followers and push-rods. New oil pump, fuel lifter and diesel filter. New piston rings.

Runs, but just smokes like a bitch (CAV timing still be worked on).

Are you sugesting that with running in the smoke will "go away" lol?

Run it under load and as fast as possible for at least 50 miles to settle everything down, then think about adjusting the timing.

After a rebuild, or even if I have changed the head gasket, I always rag the arse out of it for a few miles.

That's why my engine is nice, quiet and economical

You've completed a thorough rebuild, there will be a bit of crap to burn off. From my reading of the threads, white smoke is often just unburnt fuel. As long as you're not using water, it may just need bedding in and the timeing tweaked.

So basically rag the arse off it, leave the timing alone until its all settled in and don't worry. Sounds like a good plan!

By the way, I have found out from a taxi mechanic that I have the wrong glow plugs - seems I should be fitting the Sherpa type which glow in 3 to 7 seconds! (second picture)
And one of the new ones was broken (first picture)

or std 2.5 lr ones

I'd be very interested to see how you get on with the fast heating taxi glow plugs.
I currently hold the standard ones on for 15-20 secs before turning over.
