Diesel Power Box

Indeed. A dump valve on a diesel engine would be a bit pointless, though, since there is no throttle - diesels always effectively run at WOT.

Some none turbo/turbo diesel engines have a throttle valve linked to the pump throttle lever. Depends on engine design.

This is usually fitted to diesels with an EGR system...it creates a manifold vacuum - by creating a pressure diferential between incoming charged air and the exhaust recirc system to draw in exhaust gas.

Yes or as in the M51 a venturi to do the same thing.

Now that is a damn good question...Would I put one on mine??

There are power gains to be had....
There will be a slight increase in fuel used around town....
Slight fuel savings on the Motorways....
Reports of knackering Gearboxes....

For me it goes like this...I only really drive to work on Motorways, the rest is country lanes at home....so any fuel I save on the way to work will be offset by increased consumption driving around the green and lush Surrey Hills....

For the £20-£30 or so it would save me a month, doesn't really offset the £££ it will cost me in a new/recon G'box....

I have faith in the knowledge that Land Rover and BMW tuned and developed this engine and gearbox combination to the best of their ability at the time, with the knowledge they had, and the technology available to them....

I appreciate time moves on, technology changes and knowledge is learned...but the G'Box and Engine work together...if you change one and not the other, one has to give out first.....

Try it for a month, make notes of Mileage and fuel put in and make an informed descion based on your experiance, depth of pocket and learned knowledge.

Best of Luck....

ok thanks , thing is...you mention gear box, i always drive it carefully, dont accelerate hard, keep the revs to 2-2250 onn the motorway , very rarley "give it some " or accelerate fast , so would that still effect the gear box ?

ive not driven it too much yet but weathers on the turn now so its soon to be in full use and il really start to work out fuel use and havea go with it and see how it feels, but i stress im fuel wise over speed/power in this

but i fully see what your saying, and agree with you, about bmw/land rover in the making and tuning of these, and my bmw car etc im fully standard and would not dream of such a thing in my e30, but then thats not a 2 ton diesel truck

Gearbox would only be effected if you did a lot of towing in my view. Normal acceleration (none towing) should not effect the gearbox.

good stuff thats what i thought and also my driving style is not hard on it either, and i rarley/if ever tow , or only in an emergency if i did

Don't know what the curves are for your box. But the PSI power box max torque curve starts from around 1900-2000 RPM. Due to torque convertor slip max torque will not be put through the gearbox until torque lock comes on at 50 MPH. So if you are towing at above 50 with torque convertor lockup engaged, because the engine is effectivly solid coupled to the gearbox that is when you could over load it.

Have PSI gone bust nowadays? I would like a PSI or other power box for my P38 and I came across this thread. Are there any other companies that are doing a power box for these now or are they a bit long in the tooth to still be supplied for?

PSI are still going, or they were when I googled them a short while ago. You do know that it will knacker your gearbox don't you?

You can get:

PSI powerbox
Rimmerbros do one
Diesel Tuning Uk ( i think)
Many more are available ...

As DATA wisely says though, be careful with the gearbox... I looked into it all early on, an learned a shed load off these guys on here as too issues they can cause..
