hello i have a 88 series 3 2.3 petrol

there is nothing rong with the engine but i would like more MPG
i dont use trallers so only need the power to get the landie with nothing in it and if i have it loaded and light off roading
i want to keep my land rover it was my 1st car ay 17 and im 24
i heard the 200TDI would fit in my land rover with a few mods
but i was thinking about a gas conversion i dont know anything about gas conversions
so i was thinking what would be betta to do make my land rover a diesel of some sort or get a gas conversion as i dont have a lot to spend on this so the cost is allso a facter
look forward to hearing what you think

If you can do the work, it would probably be cheaper to convert to diesel(assuming you can get a cheap engine).
Getting a man to do either will cost lots.

TDi all the way fella .....
As long as you drive without a leaden right foot and the series box is in decent order then all should be well ....

Drive it like you stole it OR if the box is worn then it won't last long with a Tdi in front of it ....

All that said i would go Tdi over LPG any day of the week (we have 3 series between me and the Mrs) ....
Standard 2 1/4 petrol S3 109 FFR
Transit powered S3 88
And a S2a Tdi'd 88 with LT77 5 speed .....

By a long mile the S2a Tdi is the most fun to drive AND least tiring (apart from the grin muscles)

The Transit engined 88 probably has the edge on fuel economy

And the 109 FFR makes me cry like a little girl from the pain of the fuel consumption ....But i love it's militaryness so i'll forgive it

Unless you are doing mega miles the fuel costs are negligible in the grand scheme of things, a TDi will cost about a grand minimum and you will be off the road for a month, and then it will need sorting as engine swops throw up all sorts of gremlins.
Leave well alone.

thank you for your replys it has helped a lot i would like to do the work myself
i allways try and drive my landie as smooth as posabel as that littel bit of extra i can push on the excelerater just uses more fule and you dont go any faster haha i been part of a land rover club since i was 11 so i know how thay should be driven
thow im shoure there menny posts on asking about what i would need to make my 88 into a TDI
how much would it cost for a good TDI and all the bits i would need for the change over

Tdi prices are getting stupid now but in my opinion they are probably still worth it in the long run, when i did mine a couple of years ago i bought my tdi engine off ebay and paid £275 for it and after checking the engine over and replacing the timing belt, fuel lift pump, oil filler cap ( that i broke ) and giving it a service i treated it to a brand new turbo at £345 from paddocks as the fins in the old one where damaged then when i was ready to fit it into the landy as i couldn't weld i bought a ( steve parker tdi to s11a full exhaust system ) at £300 then i bought a new 300tdi radiator at £100 off ebay.

i did fit a recon'd s11a g/box but that was done before i did the conversion as i fully restored my s11a swb pertol the year before.
so

£275 for engine

£345 for the turbo

£300 for the exhaust

£100 for the radiator

£30-£50 for cons.

i would replace all of these items again just for piece of mind i know a lot of peeps wouldn't replace the turbo with a new one due to cost but tbh to me a well used turbo is like a well used overdrive but everyones budgets are different so i understand and the same with the exhaust aswell.

i know i could in the end pay double for the engine and the total conversion but with the enjoyment of doing the conversion, driving it ( totally transformed aspecially on hills what hills ) and the economy of the car with the conversion done from 16 mpg petrol to 32 mpg around town and 38 on a run diesel and performs vertually twice as good as it did as a petrol when towing in my opinion is still well worth doing again :D

but i would strongly suggest you fit a recon'd g/box if you havn't already as a worn one won't last 5 mins, hope this helps :)

thank you for your reply it helpeds a lot i did hear you can put a audi 1.4 terbo into the landrover but i dont think it would have any grunt at all

at the moment my s3 has a s2 gerbox as my origanl one does not have 1st gear but when i find some space somewhere or get a shead ill try and fix it and recon the s3 gerbox and put it back in as ther barings are just started going in the series2 gerbox

i was thinking of changing the timing belt when i get a engine because ill no way have the funds to get rebuilt one are there any tips on geting a 200DTI like comon problams

it is good to know i can buy things so i dont have means to do welding as i would have to rely on asking for help for that

allso i dont know if it is covered anywhere but would you suggest fitting diesel engine mount rubbers

thanks a lot to everyone it has helped so much

complete disco for breaking is the cheapest way to do a conversion, look for an mot failure that you can drive round the block to assess it's condition

this will give you a complete engine, starter, alternator and radiator (unless the rad is rotten) also "should" give you the diffs

under 500quid (lots less if you're lucky) and just a timing belt to change

i've not bought an exhaust yet but i can weld so mine only cost me time really

actual engine swap is pretty simple and there's plenty of guides already on the web, think i've written up both my swaps

the biggest obstacle you may find is space and tools (have you either ?? )

like anything it'll be easier if you have already done a little more than just oil changes and can spend some time THINKING (thinking is the most important bit) to work out bits

i could borrow some space at the bottom of my dads garden so that would give me space a time
as to what i know and tools i have some and i could borrow or get the ones i need as no dout ill need some agen i was training to be a mechanic i did my 1st year traning and have worked in a few garege for about 2 years but not that much of this sort of thing ill have time to think about it as my landie is currently off the road was thinking of doing it before i get it back on the road
and my dad has done the 200TDI convershon on his 109 but as he works and not much free time i would have to do most of it myself as i know the 88 has a few more problams like trying to fit the terbo in if you know of any right ups that are could could your show me
i have been trying to look for a disco close to where i am that are mot fails
thanks agen

fitting the 200tdi into the 88" is a nice easy conversion, two ways of getting the outlet from the turbo to the intercooler

lazy way is to cut the bottom of the inner wing to clear the pipework

better way is to "clock" the turbo outlet port upwards and drill and tap two new holes to remount the actuator

look for glencoynes walk through (google) for complete instructions on doing a comprehensive conversion, or check out terriann's website for all the modification links you could want

i've fitted two 200tdi's to Series landrovers and am in the middle of my third one

well im looking at it and does not seem too hard what i have read so far only things is now finding a 200 TDI haha not easy in essex

there are some 300TDi's as i understand it there not so easy to fit in and a 1994 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY TDI

is there ways of telling tham apart and would this disco have a 200TDI in it sorry i dont now much about thies engines the help has made it easyer to see what i can do and price it all up and deside what to do

the 200tdi has a two V belts, one driving the waterpump and powersteering, the second drives the alternator from the powersteering pump

the 300tdi has a single ancillary (serpentine) belt that drives all of them

both engines can be fitted relatively easily but the 200 is the easier of them if you have ultra limited facilities and/or experience

it's really worth your time looking on the Series 2 forum as we have a 300tdi section and a 200tdi section in the workshop

for fitting the 300tdi i suggest you look for Swampy's thread on his installation as he has worked out how to build the offside engine mount and remote the oil filter to save you cutting the chassis, he's also described what to do about the flywheel housing problem without the expense of changing it
