It's very difficult on a forum to diagnose a problem without being hands on.we assume that all things are working as they should, very hard when there had been a ,as yet undisclosed , failureThank you kind sir

Good Afternoon All,
After much deliberation and fettling the engine eventually gave up, opening up the engine, it turns out there was damage deep inside the engine and is not worth repairing. I am now looking to get a 2nd hand engine installed.
Does anyone know anyone in Sussex who could replace an engine?
Thanks,
Heavy old lump, so be careful, but a second hand engine is probably your best bet.thanks @Grrrrrr will give them a ring.
All - Basically bottom end damage from what I saw stripping what I could in the ****ing rain, it has a cracked head aswell. I am sure it can rebuilt and new head but the amount of work I have put into it and any further damage it had caused when it was running before it conked out for good, not worth it.
I am fuming as you guys probably know with all your help I tried all what I can, just going to swap for another one. Luckily it is just a weekend/project car.
All in all there are many different opinions and ways of doing things and I have to admit I probably have not done things correctly but done my best so just have to take a deep breath and move on.
Let the micky taking begin
I doubt the power box is to blame as the M51 produces more power in other applications than it does in the P38.Another one with a cracked head following addition of a powerbox. The numbers are racking up.

BMW ran the engine at 150bhp. But didn't have a 2.25t body surrounding it..
I am probably going to strip old engine down anyway as half done whilst sourcing another engine, will probably get garage to install engine.
My only issue is I bought the FIP timing guage holder off another post with the specs along with the DTI guage but they do not seem to be right and have trouble sourcing the one from RAVE.
Is there a definite spec or supplier I can buy the correct timing tools for please?
Fuel filter with a hand pump on the top? Never seen one of those and I have one of the earliest P38's plus 2 later ones. I suspect it's not the correct filter housing, so the correct one should fit OK.Thanks @wammers I bought these two so probably not used them properly.
The fuel filter housing I have is cracked and has the hand pump on top, can't seem to find them anywhere, but there are plenty of the other type use on later P38's, can this type be fitted or electrical connections different?
Thanks,
Those are bloody cheap. The set I bought when I did the cam belt on the Alfa cost five times that.
Don't know about Sussex but @RichardSEL was recommending these guys if you're near the top?
