right then, this gauze filter was on the lift pump if i remember correctly. there is a round thing on the top and its zinc plated. there is a flat topped screw in the middle. undo this screw and take the top off, there is a gauze filter in the bit thats left. take this out and wash with fairy liquid. dry it thoroughly then re-assemble it all. pump the fuel through via the lift pump then start the car. it may take a bit of starting but keep trying.if after about ten minutes it still won't have it then give up, have it torched and report it stolen ;)

Yella,
Torching is gonna be a bit suspect me being Fire Brigade and all..see me avatar, here's one I done earlier...:D

I'll have a look at that filter jobby, and report if I've got one. The lift pump is the one in the tank or am I in muppet mode?

Yella,
Abort that one, me heinz manual sez the lift pump is only on the td4, not the oldie..:(

Ah well, least its not that.....
Sorry ta butt in ,but think that the old type pump twas a lift pump but they never called it that in the old days,so worth checkin out yella's filter bit, just a thought, best oh luck, , ,

Right guys, I'm struggling to find the filter as Yella sez, Can you recall where abouts on the lump it was at all Yella?

Mingy, I've checked plugs and leads, all ok. Just traced the earth off the battery, what a place to put it! seems ok. Even tried disconnecting the EGR jobby see what that would do. Nowt special on that either. To be honest, if I have to swop the fuel lines, at least its one less thing to go wrong. Yella, I'm assuming you're a disco man, do you know owt about the reported leaky /porous fuel pie issue?

I love the plod..:p if you want a giggle, change the lettering on their back number plate with a chinagraph when they're not looking. They love that....:D

Up in court next week.....

Guys,
just been reading all the horror stories about fuel leaks on p38's.I'm gonna get a length of clear fuel pipe, try that in and see if the bubbles thing is the same with t'hippo, if so its pipe me up time..hope it's really that simple....

The fuel lines are attached to the coolant pipes as one nice big unit. Just replaced mine as the water pipe was corroded. Nightmare of a job but picked up some easy methods on the way. Relay relay relay...la..la..la..la..la...Can't hear you...la..la..la..la..relay..relay..relay...la.la..la....

Tiny,
Forgot to say in the last post, I found a 70amp relay after a bit of searching, its on, and starting is definately easier, Thanks! Still got the issue with the smoke, but it only takes 10 secs of turning over now instead of 20! I can still bleed shedloads of air out of the system, have now bled 5 times and still getting air, either I have the worlds biggest airlock, or it is leaking from somewhere. I'm gonna get a bit of clear fuel pipe, and insert it between the fuel filter and the injectors, so i can watch progress. If I end up with a bubble tracking back towards the fuel tank, at least I'll know it is a leak.

Funnily enough, I feel a lot happier knowing its odds on a fuel pipe leak/pinprick now, That is relatively easily rectifiable, and having read some of the ideas from the P38 threads on the subject, feel its on the verge of success..famous last words..:D

Its true. Don't worry about it Yella - I keep atanding in the kitchen wondering what I came in for. :D
Glad the relay has made some difference! Could be worth checking those silly clips on the fuel pipe where they attach to the rubber hoses too...
