Hi further to my previous posts this Td4 just keeps giving lol, faults that is!
After all the work previously mentioned and removal of broken glow plug electrodes from head I was jumping for joy ( short lived ) I started the car up ran quieter didn't smoke and I thought great all done however after running it a while when revs are increased to 2000 up there is an overfueling situation blue/grey diesel smelling smoke quite a bit. I can't road test yet as sorn but I suspect injector so going to do a leak off test, kit ordered today.I have a snap on Ethos scan tool that ran out of upgrades in 2005 when I stopped mechanicing it does read everything on this Td4 though. I don't have a set of good values and wondered if anyone can point me in the right direction ie from memory low pressure fuel 2.5 bar, high 250 - 300 bar,maf 12 + kg/h idle upwards that sort of thing I used to have a book with known good values when I worked in the trade but now nothing.
I was informed after I bought this from a online seller that it had just had a replacement turbo so I wondered if the EGR bypass is causing gunk to be picked up from the intercooler but that doesn't tie in with the strong diesel fuel smelling exhaust. I do hope at some point not to be using this site for all the bad things about FL1s and can't wait to be more positive my wife's on my back with those little helpful comments like You've bought a pig there haven't You so the reply is usually shut up you know nothing it's a hippo.response bemused vacant look lol.

On a good, well serviced TD4 I'd expect to see the following readings at idle speed.

LP rail 360 Kpa, give or take.

HP rail 25,000 Kpa, give or take.

MAP 100 Kpa, give or take.

The MAF value is variable between vehicles, but should swing to higher values as the engine comes on to boost.

As for the smell. Have you checked the oil level? Is it very high? Does the oil filler hole smell like diesel? If so then the HP pump is leaking into the sump.

I can't see the EGR bypass causing an issue, as it's just a though pipe and an exhaust transfer pipe blank.

Thanks for info oil level ok, after running for about 30 min and clearing map error code adding fuel injector cleaner the engine came good.I wondered because I replaced the fuel filter and drained the water separator whether I sent a load of disturbed gunk to the injectors given this vehicle had clearly been abused in the past. For a few moments the oil pressure light illuminated after adding clean oil and I added a oil clean/flush additive to hopefully cure that and another oil change on the cards, I will get this right eventually.

I can post values for SWMBOs TD4 if you like but it isn't exactly healthy. It vibrates and smokes like crazy and will need a new set of injectors once the weather warms up enough for me to contemplate fixing cars. However it does run and idle.

Thanks for offer but good values only lol. Today I removed the starter to get at the oil pressure switch/sensor and luckily I found the unit to be faulty leaking oil into the wire so happy nothing more at this time.I have bought a second hand oil pressure test gauge kit and intend testing pressure at turbo to block connection so if someone knows what pressure I should expect there it would be helpful please.
I'm waiting for my injector leak off test kit to arrive to test the injectors as the dreaded 2500 rpm overfueling has returned I am thinking sticking injector, sleight misfire and symptoms displayed, once I have those results if nothing definitive found I'll get my mate to diagnose it on the electronics side He does it for a living on Land rovers only and is very good however it will cost me! understandably though. This will get done but it's painful not been on the road.

According to my Haynes manual (God bless John Haynes, RIP) minimum oil pressure is 1.5 bar and maximum is 4.2 bar. The oil pressure warning light will come on below 0.2 to 0.5 bar.

Thanks for the reply I fitted the new oil switch today and no light on now but I'm still going to check the pressure at the turbo feed for peace of mind and I do believe the pressure is restricted to the turbo deliberately. I could be wrong but if anyone knows let me know please I'm looking at the banjo bolt to hose back of the engine as my connection point.

I don't believe the oil pressure to the turbo bearings is reduced below gallery pressure. Flow volume will be reduced, as the oil goes though the drillings in the banjo bolts, but pressure should remain the same.

There's also nothing in engine manual that suggests a lower pressure at the turbo, not that I can see anyway.

Thanks for the replies, Alan.

Further to my last post today I used my newly acquired leak back test kit on my injectors and the readings were fairly conclusive I need them reconditioning. cyl 1 4cc cyl 2 4.5cc cyl 3 7cc and the winner cyl 4 at 10cc all at idle in about 45 seconds increasing at higher rpm.
Hopefully the reconditioning of these will stop the overfuelling at 2300 rpm.
Photo shows sleightly different readings one of a few pics taken at same time but it's obvious the leak back fuel is uneven.
