Does it make a difference if I say that it is a lot worse at starting after a run and the engine is hot.

Yes. Makes me say camshaft sensor. But that shows a fault code.
a worn out hp.fuel pump will do that ..
however that'll include other symptoms, like loss of power-on-demand when driving,
dash warning light .. ..
a faulty injector might .. .. depending on the cause i'd guess.
...............
if it drives ok .. but just starts worse when hot ..
camshaft sensor is often the culprit.
it only gets used for starting the engine .. not in effect once engine is running.
some folk have been known to test it by sticking it in a fridge for a while,
the re-install 'n see how .. or if .. it starts.

Well I changed the camshaft sensor and I think it made a bit of a difference but not enough to say that it is sorted. I want to buy a leak off test kit to check the injectors and also change the glow plugs but I’m really nervous about the glow plugs as I have heard that they can be a nightmare and snap off in the engine.
I have had other issues that have taken priority such as fitting my 3rd set of drop links (I’m assuming they keep failing because of the awful roads around me) and also renewing the whole braking system just to have to hunt squealing brakes down after just to find that it’s because I fitted (what my mechanic calls) awful pads (forodo).
Still I love my Freelander.
Why are you burning through drop links so quick. What’s wrong?

I have no idea. This is the first 4x4 I’ve ever owned so I have no way of knowing that this is t relatively normal. Also I researched it and apparently with worsening roads and with owning a 4x4 drop links fail more often.
I do live really rurally and the roads by me really are awful and I use Delphi drop links instead of Meyle HD which are ment to be better.
What’s your experience? How many have you been through?
Has the suspension been lifted or altered?

No the suspension had not been altered in any way. As far as I know it is original off the assembly line suspension.
I spoke to a mate who lives about half hour away from me (we both live in Mid Wales) and he says that he has replaced his drop links a good number of times and reckons it’s the rural Welsh roads.
