No problem at the moment with diagnosing issues, but I wondered if I can pick-up a diagnostic tool relatively cheaply for my 2003 Disco 2 Td5. I've heard Nanocom and Hawkeye mentioned a fair bit and welcome any opinions/thoughts on the various options.
 
Yes nanocom is the bees knees but it can hardly be considered "relatively cheaply" as the OP wants...for diagnostic purposes and basic programming(incomparabe with nanocom's capabilities) i can recommend Foxwell NT 510 Land Rover

Foxwell NT 510 looks good! Bonus is I can pay extra USD50 to use it on my VW as well? Nanocom looks great, but it is expensive and I always wonder about "super-dooper" diagnostic tools of any sort that are a bit over-the-top, particularly for the older vehicles (like Disco 2) and require a PhD to operate/interpret.
 
A friend of mine has a foxwell as he bought it for his freelander and we plugged it in my D2 to see how it works... i wasnt so brave to go with it in the security area cos i was on the run but it has in the menu some usefull features...if you go for it and ''explore'' it better make a review
 
Have no fear about Nanocom, as Fery says, it is the bees knees for D2's but expensive. Periodically there are group buys arranged on www.d2bc.co.uk which makes the price a little better. But I would not regard it as a "super dooper tool that is a bit over the top". It is just a really good diagnostic system, that is regularly updated by Blackbox Solutions, and covers many LR models, albeit that you have to purchase unlock codes for different models.

It would be good if there was a guide to the capabilities of these machines,this seems to be a topic that’s asked almost on a daily basis.
Like what each one can and can’t do? Prices etc etc
 
So, looking for a 2nd hand nanocom evolution (new too expensive), 2nd hand Hawkeye, new Foxwell NT510 or maybe a new iCarsoft i930 as per this link:

Will probably end up going for the NT510 as recommended by sierrafery, but if a used Nanocom Evolution is out there I might "pounce"! Any opinions on the iCarsoft i930?

I assume all of the above plug in to the outlet behind the panel underneath the steering wheel. Have never used a diagnostic tool before. Was going to get one for my VW a little while back but baulked at the price. I believe for extra $50 the Foxwell can also work with the VW - will have to look into this.
 
dont touch any older version of ICarsoft i930 than the LR1 or V1.0 cos those dont work with the td5 it's confirmed, this seems to be the improved version see it's vehicle coverage https://www.scantool-direct.co.uk/i...c-tool-land-rover-jaguar-and-range-rover.html , i've seen the LR II in action(which should be even better than the LR 1 but it is not so smart like the Foxwell which can do suspension, security and key programming too

Lookin' like Foxwell - see them new around $250 - $300, also some out of Hong Kong and China for $80 - $100 which surely can't be the same thing? Guess they're probably made in China though?

The diagnostics socket is just below the drop down panel, no need to open it. You'll find it towards the centre tunnel, sort of down by your left knee.
I have come across one or two which have been slightly damaged and then you might have to open the panel to hold the socket in place to plug in your code reader.
 
I've just taken mine to an on-site VAG garage who have the latest all singing and dancing diagnostic machines and they have said none of their 3 machines will talk to my D2 TD5, they are suggesting there must be a fault with my socket. Is it possible it is just their machines or could they be right about my socket, is it a major changing the socket?
