Defender puma 2008 poor gear selection

Hi all
So I've replaced the clutch and bearing on the defender . I had a mechanic friend help me out and all seemed well.
The issue I know have is that the gear change is really clunky. 2nd to 3rd is bad. It feels like it is missing a gate.
Any ideas?

Just to add to this, it is the mt82 box and basically you can select first gear ok and change in to second. When you then go for third it heads over to fifth.

It feels very tight at the bottom of the gear lever, I have smothered it in grease.

Any pointers would be appreciated.
