I know this is a difficult question as it could be either the defender or discovery section. I am looking at either a defender or discovery. I have only had a series 3 before so used to that type of landrover but I have been offered 2 defenders and 1 discovery..

------------------------------------------------------------------
K reg n90 tdi in Arles blue with 120k miles taxed til end of May and mot until the end of 2010.. circa £4k

90 Defender N reg in vgc,80k miles, alloys,5 seats in dark metalic blue,TD5 spec.under £5k

1999 DISCOVERY 2.5 TD5 7 SEATER 50000 MILES ON a NEW ENGINE - 12m mot 5m tax manual 2.5 td5 7 part service history ,engine replaced by land rover at 96000
..around £4k

------------------------------------------------------------

Obviously the discovery is more 'comfortable' but I will only be carrying 2 adults and three children plus a dog maybe twice a fortnight and I am more concerned about servicing, maintenance costs and what happens if things go wrong ....

what does everyone think ?

90's are a bit on the high side. Disco is nearly double what it's worth. have a look on auto trader and ebay put half a doz of each with similar specs on ya watch list and see what they fetch.

cuz i love em?!?! y else?!? :D

Well if he's planning on carrying 2 adults, 3 children & a dog. A defender 90, is gonna be a bit cramped. I would have thought a bit more info was needed to avoid knee jerk reactions

Oh and I've owned 110, 90 & disco. and to be honest there's fookall to choose from in offroad abilty. Unless your into competition or extreme P&P driving.

get a 130, loads of room in them ;) drive a td5 disco(mothers) and 110(mine), and i hate the disco, stupid auto leveling ****e and sports suspension.... pain in the arse :D

Thanks guys for the advice so far.

I didnt want too big a landrover as my wife will occasionally drive it and she is quite petite and she would drive a 90 but probably not a 110. I have a nissan patrol 7 seater which is up for sale and she refuses to drive it bless her.

Interesting what people think about the discovery. I have driven a few of the early ones and never really liked the drive whereas I loved my series III

I have just had the N reg td5 guy email me back and he wants £6k.. he says its the best landy he has had

Tell him to shove his head up his arse and choke on the smell. Cheeky fooking twaart

sorry forgot to tell you guys what its for.

My wife has her own car and for daily use I will be using my trusty old 124k a3 tdi. The landy will be used take my dog out for a walk and occasionally the whole family but not that often. I do not initially intend to use it for off roading but would love to start some day.

As I said in my first email I remember with my series III getting an exhaust pipe for around £20 and having welded for about another fiver whereas my nissan costs an arm and a leg to keep on the road

Well the defender is what you need then, just make sure to buy a good one. Time is on your side so make sure your very fussy if it takes a few months to find the right one it is time well spent.

Thanks again..

I wish it was easy as that..I am not a mechanic etc so I will unfortunately have to rely on the look and feel of the drive etc which I guess could be a disaster when buying a 90. Also due to my nissan being off the road I really need to have a 90 in 1-2 months at the latest

Cheers guys.. If anyone is interested I can send them the info and pictures of the 90's that have been offered to me.

This is what the guy said:-

I have a 90 Defender N reg in vgc,80k miles, alloys,5 seats in dark metalic blue,TD5 spec.

About £6k,
Just over 80k miles
Have most of its MOTs
Owned since Dec 2006
Only things that I am aware of is the passenger door doesnt always lock from outside and for some strange reason the wipers can sometimes come on by themselves may just be a dirty contact?
It is due for MOT and has been prepared for this to be carried out.
The interior has cloth seats all round, sunroof, stereo, carpets.
No rust I'm aware of,the bulkhead and chassis are sound.
No finance.
Done very little miles over the past year or so due to moving and having no where to keep it,I presently keep it at a friends farm.
I have had a fw Landys over the years and would say this is the best one I have had, drives really well and always admired by people

Does that make sense ? this is the pic he sent
