Do I get a Defender or Discovery?

I am at a bit of a loss to understand this arguement. As I understand it, apart from the body, the chassis is very similar - OK , so its 100" rather than 90 or 110", but that is a mid position. I believe that the suspension and drive is identical, so how is it that a 200TDi Defender 110 can be more capable than a 200TDi Disco. I am assuming that the specs are identical (same engine, same lift, same tyres etc etc).
Ok the Disco will rust more, because it has steel panels, but arent defender Bulkheads also prone to the rot-worm?
I stll cannot see why there should be any difference in capability for 2 identically spec'd motors.
 
There isn't the only advantage a 90 has over a Disco is a slightly better approach and departure angle bit for most laning etc that will never become an issue and they have a slightly better power to weight ratio. with them been lighter than a disco but not enough to make that much of a difference.
 
In my opion, The disco is the most useable day to day unless you have a load of kids and need the space,
The rangie is tight on space and i realy dont see what all the fuss is about.

The 90 is good for off road , there again it has very limited space to carry stuff around.

The 110 is great for ferryin stuff and probably the most versatile, i havnt got use to the lack of elbow room yet. roll on summer when i can get the window down .

Disco's also make great vans epecially if you take the rear seats out and extend the floor all the way to the back of the front seats.
 
thats true, but if you just fold the seats down you can have a mini bus one minute and a van the next.

the seats only take up 8inch or so.

Aye but I'm billy no mates and the floor was rotten. so I just lined the floor with 1/2" Ply and extended it straight thru. & cos it was a 3door it worked really well and I had the extra hidden storage behind the seats then.
 
The way I look at it, the differences are only small in spec. The real difference is in the bodywork and interior.

I got a defender, because thats what I always wanted.

Now, you're looking at two vehicles that do well off-road, why don't you just go for the one that you just naturally like more....

Nah, only kidding. I'd have loved a Defender myself. It's the original and the best. But as I spend at least 80% of my time on road, and most of that motorways, getting a Discovery was a choice made by my head. If I'd listened to my heart, then I would have got a Defender.

I agree. Really there is very little in the off road capability stakes between them.

Tyres and the driver would make more of a differance than whether you were in a Defender or a Disco.
 
one thing i like about my disco is i can drive 100 miles, off road all day and still drive 70 miles an hour on the way home, i dont think i could do the same in the same comfort in a defender, but i would still like a 90

decent set of tyres on em and there int alot in it, its how you drive it
