Beg to differ after my off roading day today. Mate has a Defender 90, diff lockers, QT arms and all the toys. Mine has standard diff's, lifting blocks, standard arms and everywhere he could go I followed. :D

Happily challenge any Defender to loose me on an off road course. :D

He obviously never got off the novice course! :D:D:D

First Pay & Play day today at Aldermaston showed my mates Disco to be plenty cable, so I think in terms of offroad performance, for my use at least - no difference!

like i pointed out a disco is perfectly capable, especily when it has been lifted and bigger wheeles and tires etc, this might be a silly question but i am new to this forum and dont realy know how to ask questions and post threads so can someone tell me please, thanks:)

could always try clicking the new thread box.

When I brought a defender 2years ago every1 told me I was mad, "I should get a disco". Sorry but I would not have a disco they don't appeal to me at all. (my view). I love my defender have treated her to a V8, +2" suspension steering/diff guards bucket seats. I abuse it every time I drive it and she still goes on. LOVE IT.

You have one life buy a defender.

This is an interesting and funny discussion

I have had 2 old range rovers, 2 series III's and at the moment due to circumstances which I wont labour about a 97 auto disco. For my wife and kids its warm, roomy, relatively quiet. I dont green lane although have been on 4x4 driving courses so its used solely on the road... what would I have if I had the chance... a 90/100 tdi defender. Why? because as everyone says its noisy, can be cold, not very comfortable and because of that its just so much fun.

Ok it would mean my 4 hours trip to see my brother in Norfolk would probably take 5 hours and instead of one coffee stop I may take 3 just to stop my family moaning, but when I get there and look out of my brothers barn window I'll probably just stare lovingly at it.. weird I know but thats what landrovers do for you..

One question though.. I may have to look for a 110 this time due to family and dogs.. are they basically the same as the 90 in terms of Noise, comfort, etc ?

I inherited a Defender 110, 200 tdi and I love it. Yes it's not as comfortable as a Disco but to me disco's are beginning to look old fashion and dated whereas the Defender seems timeless. I also feel what ever you spend on a Defender you will get back when you come to sell it if you ever do, where as to me money spent on a Disco is lost. Also on a Defender if you scratch it or put a dent on it it gives it character. Not so with a Disco. I use my Defender for carrying wood and all sorts of other things. When I'm done I just wash it out. don't think you could do the same with a disco. My Defender has crossed Morocco several times without any problems. If your useing it mainly on roads then the Disco would be more comfortable and warmer in the winter. If you want to have fun greenlaning and getting dirty then go for the Defender. I live in the French countryside, The Defender is top dog here, If I lived in the city then I might go for the Disco. For here there is no contest. The Defender wins. Hope that might help. Good Luck.

Just read the last comment from small zoo.......I agree with the bit about getting dents etc but all the rest I don't! You don't upgrade a disco or defender on the basis on what you may make on it you do it for the love of it plus I've owned both discos and a few 90's and they both are equal off road providing you have a decent set of tyres of course. So you can have just as much fun in both and get as far with both green laning but obviously defenders interior are more durable and noisier lol and boots rot out in disco ones and as I've noticed on mine the chassis has some rust on the rear (disco 2) but both are great landys its personal preference

I've had both too, I had the TD5 disco, ES model so full leather, full electrics etc etc, great vehicle, excellent driving position and very comfortable, BUT, every time I drove it a different warning light would show, sometimes all of them, suspension problems, head gasket, everything was really expensive to sort out. Also very heavy and it felt it and not good on fuel, I'd still have another haha.

Now have a 93 200TDI 110 defender, don't no, somehow I'm attached to it, worry about it on the drive at night etc, parts are cheap, well most of them, no warning lights, no egr valves, if the head gasket goes I can stick a new one in in half an hour, I love the old thing.
Build thread coming shortly as I've just got a galvanised chassis and new bulkhead, one vehicle I will never sell.

If it's your only vehicle, your married and like sex I'd go with the discovery , if you're single and celibate go with the defender but don't expect to pull many women in it

Discovery, car

Defender, tractor you can drive on the road

Don't know but my 110 gets plenty attention from women. If I have it out at night when not drinking, Coming out of a pub to see a girl posing for a camera in front of it is a regular occurrence and they with abit of luck usually ends up with them needing a lift home :D

The Defender is definitely the one you pick kind of as a keeper I reckon. I wanted a TD5 Defender and even though Discoverys were less than half the price, I knew I'd only longing for a Defender until I got one.

The fact they hold their value so well is mostly because pick a brand new one and an early 200tdi in very good condition and at a quick glance or to the untrained eye, they don't look any different so are immune to reg plate snobbery. Pick and early Disco 1 and a Disco 3/4 or even a nice facelift Disco 2 and it's a different story for most people

The Defender just has a timeless look that'll probably be never age. That coupled with the reputation it has will keep values high.

Offroad, I can't really see how a Disco 1 or Defender would have any advantage over each other offroad as they are pretty much identical suspension wise. Only difference is you can fit 33" tyres on a standard Defender without any other mods that'll help it go further.

A Disco 2 is very good offroad too. Only trouble is when compared to a TD5 Defender, parts are more expensive when they break.

I think if getting a Discovery, I'd have to get a TD5 as its just much more comfortable and in my opinion far nicer all-round than a 300tdi Disco.

I prefer TD5 Defenders too just because I really like the engine and its tuning potential and the interior is slightly nicer if the post '02 models but a 300tdi one would be equally as good in most cases.

One question though.. I may have to look for a 110 this time due to family and dogs.. are they basically the same as the 90 in terms of Noise, comfort, etc ?

Reckon the 110s are slightly more comfortable as they feel more planted on the road and don't have an as bouncy feeling.

To be honest, my TD5 110dcpu isn't much louder than my Dad's Disco 2 on the motorway until you get over 60mph. Mine has a de-cat and center box removed as opposed to only removing the cat on his so that makes the engine note louder but sounds brilliant so don't care about that.
On backroads, its noiser alright obviously because of shakes and rattles here and there but on a long trip, I'd pick either really and have no preference. Mine has a Disco transfer box however and that makes a huge difference to noise at higher speeds and fuel economy. Have extra sound proofing and really comfy seats too.

End of the day... If your have to think about deciding which one to get, just get a Defender as you know its what your heart wants :D
