Hi,

First post here (although have been looking for a while to buy a post-2007 defender 90) and hope someone can help… a 2009 XS is for sale at Stratstone (http://www.stratstone.com/VehicleSearch/Used/land-rover-used-car-LB58GZH.html?qs=False&type=1)
But has some rust on the tail plate (photo can been viewed using the link above) and wondering whether this is normal or whether the start of a bigger problem? Any experience/guidance would be very much appreciated!
Thank you in advance,
ABailey

please now find attached to this post the photo of the tail plate rust as mentioned in my last post. Thanks.

That looks like a rear crossmember not a tailpipe……don't see why you're worried about the exhaust being a bit rusty its a mild steel pipe on a vehicle in a wet country with salted roads

If its the crossmember then as said rub it down and paint it with some red ox then tractol or epoxy mastic

Who mentioned exhaust?

Yes its a common problem and no its not difficult to sort, clear rust off, paint over with red oxide or other suitable rust inhibiter then paint with a top coat

Although for a 4 year old motor that's a bit crap isn't it?

Check over the whole chassis carefully, if a visible non-mud trapping area is like that what are the areas that trap and hold mud and moisture like?

Thanks so much for the useful advice.

I got the garage to have a look round the car as well and they came back to me mentioning that the side tubes/steps also have rusted. I appreciate now that these parts can be sorted but throws into question the areas that can’t be seen and so if I do pursue this particular defender I will make sure the car is given a proper inspection.

Thank you again.

Best,

Is that the same garage that's selling it?

I'd take someone independent.
