Hi guys,
Defender 90, 300 tdi 1997. Wiper in off position stays on and goes off when it feels like it. Can hear relay now and again.
Relay, rest sensor in motor, switch on coloum all renewed. Motor is working.Problem persists!!! Even more wierd!.... when screen goes dry, wiper stops. All operations then appear to work OK. Intermittent, slow and fast, wash and wipe on pressing stalk work OK. Anybody please help!!!!
cheers

Storm, please stop posting this ****. thank you.

Well , well, and here was I thinking that I was on the right site here, got sensible, contructive replies in the past but now it seems it has like a lot of others moved downhill into the gutter. Tempted to bite but made of stronger metal. What a waste of a good forum.

Ignore some of the people who post on here, they have no manners and talk rubbish (I didn't understand it either).

I had a similar problem on my 90 the other day and it was down to the contacts on the bottom of the intermitant delay relay not being firmly pushed home into the relay-block. All fine for ages and then the wipers got a mind of there own, re-seated the relay and all appears to be ok so far.

Storm is a regular poster so well known, is just back in the UK and has had a large number of problems, many electrical following his journey - relax and go with the flow.

Amongst the humour and jibes you'll always get help.

Now on the basis that the Landy won't be fitted with rain detector automatic wiper activation:D you've found the cause - water creating a short.

Now the question is where!

Litch's suggestion is good, I'd also remove, clean and protect (silicon/WD40) the contacts on the wiper motor itself - not impossible that you've got water coming through the bulkead or windscreen seal and dripping down.

Other thought would be a chaffed wire - the wiring runs from the steering column along a channel behind the dash to the motor
