Hi I need some help with my Defender 90_1989 Diesel. Engine switches off with ignition key. But power stays on fuel, temperature gauge and stereo won't switch off even the key is out.

Welcome to the forum.

Any rust on it?

Increase the security. They're easily nicked.

Hi I am the legal owner. Please explain what is the hot wired ignition means?
Sounds like someone bypassed the ignition system and took power from the battery to the circuits which would usually be off. I think the indication from posts was that's what someone would do if they were nicking it :)

Hi I'v just googled the hot wiring lol. It's not hot wired. People in Birmingham or elsewhere are not the same.
I recall breaking my ignition in an old Cavalier in 1997 and the AA chap had to hot wire it...… For a few months I had to start the car by joining 2 wires than tapping the 2 together as he had showed me... it was awesome and I felt like a real Rebel!
I doubt they would do that now :)

My Defender start and stop with the key, but not disconnecting the power for gauge meters and stereo. I think I have to remover dash to check the wiring or change the ignition switch.

yes, check wiring on ignition switch, brown is battery live, white ignition live white/orange auxillary ignition live, it should become live first, click second click puts dash lights on
