Decat pipe??

Cheers Big Lad. My 300tdi has covered 241000 miles and the down pipe looks to be origional. If thats the case the particulate filter (cat) must be blocked solid. Pulling away up hill from a stand still in 1st gear was painful as you watch the pedestrians walking past! I flicked the engine over with the down pipe disconected and the turbo spins straight up with little presure on the pedel and I also noticed that before the down pipe was remover the pedle had to be pushed a fair distance to even move the revs from tick over but now just a little tap and revs respond instantly. Cant wait to get the pipe on! Cheers
 
I have now fitted the defender 300tdi down pipe to my disco 300tdi. Phew... who ever said that its a snug fit needs there nuts squeezing!:D I think that when the chassis is bare in the Landrover factory the first thing they fit is the down pipe. I dont mind getting in different postions and quite enjoy it when laying down (With a leggy red head) but not on the drive way in the rain with an unbendable pipe in my hand. Anyway its on now and I found that undoing all four bolts that secure the anti roll bar to the chassis and droping the roll bar helped a lot (Thanks Big Lad). The results!!!! Not a massive improvement but I can tell.

WITH CAT from 25mph in third gear going up hill near where I live the first road sign I passed was at 30mph the second road sign I passed was at 39mph foot to the floor

WITH DECAT (DEFENDER DOWN PIPE) The fist sign I passed at 34mph and the second sign I passed at 45mph

Initial pull away has improved slightly and mid range seems to have improved the most. Turbo noise is now more noticible and the exhaust note is slightly deeper (a bit growley) but no where near boy racer standards :p

If you are doing the mod for a very noticible or large increase in performance then dont bother but if your after a subtle increase to assist in towing or more comfortable every day use then go for it.

only had a disco 4 days and joined club a few hours.just wanted to find out if flexy or solid pipe the best,i dont want to buy twice

The original Disco downpipe has a flexy section but the cheap Defender one doesn't, but you wouldn't notice the difference.

Defender pipe is deffo the way to go.
 
Is it still necessary to jack up the chassis and drop the anti roll bar with the flexi pipe, or does that give you enough manoeuvrability to fit it without the hassle?

If you jack up the chassis (not the axle) you will have enough room to fit a solid or flexy downpipe. The only real difference is price.

Erm, quite surprised at some of the advice here, yes it will fit (although the diameter of it can make the 3 bolts tricky to get on and will often need the welds grinding back) but it doesnt have the flexi, this will mean the exhaust will take all the engine vibrations and fatigue the 3 turbo studs and the center gasket. It will work now but down the line you may have more troubles as well as the exhaust knocking all over the place...

For the extra £20 fit the correct pipe...

Sorry mate but don't agree at all with your points.

I must have done at least 10 TDi 300's with the ESR2297 Defender pipe without ANY problems at all. First one was done over ten years ago still running perfectly.

Incidently the flexy Disco pipe is £42.50+vat the Defender one is:£15.25+vat. That's more than £20 in my book. (based on Paddocks prices)
 
When I fitted a Defender pipe (£10 at a show) it went on easily and is still on some 6 or more years later ... No issues whatsoever ...
 
I paid £27 for my flexi pipe but it was a trade price. I fitted it as the solid pipe knocked and the flange join kept blowing, fitted a flexi and had no issues afterwards....

I will quite happily retract my comments as im going on generic experience, flexis are there to reduce vibrations from the engine to the rest of the exhaust and the strees on mounts/studs, in many vehicles it causes the problems I mentioned but if you say its good I will go with that, my landrover expertise is not as varied as other vehicles I have owned/worked on, its there for a reason, LR obviously thought it necessary but then the disco was a 'luxury' car so it may have been purely to reduce some vibrations...
