Hi all,

I am in need of some serious advice please, as my Rangie has died. A bit of history first. One of the head gaskets ruptured, at this point everything worked fine except for niagra falls coming from the back of the engine. So I was in process of fixing this when I was called away by work for a couple of months.

On return, finished the replacement of the head gasket, all complete tried to start the truck - doh flat battery.

1. Recharged the battery, key code lock out - b****r. Enter EKA code fine, alarm de-activated.
2. Tried to start - no starter motor cranking, no relay 16 clicking. On message display all normal indications except for "Check Engine" (at no point did it flash or come on).
3. Check battery voltage = 11.97v. Short Relay 16 connections 30 & 87 starter cranks engine.
4. With the ignition switch in position II, check voltages around relay 16, as expected 85, 86 & 30 read 11.9v - 87 reads 0v.
5. In position III at 85 still reads 11.9v. Go to output of BECM at plug C113 pin 2 - voltage check from position II to III should go from 11.9v to 0v (i.e. earth) - stays at 11.9v. :)mad: oh no!!!!!)
6. Go to the input of the BECM at plug C257 pin 6 - voltage check should go from 11.9v to 0v when turned from position II to III - reads 11.9v then drops to 0v when turned to position III.
7. I've had a guy run testbook on it as well just to make sure the BECM and the Engine ECU were in sync, his conclusion was wiring.
8. But to me it looks like the BECM it not allowing the earth signal through to energize the starter relay (16). However when turning the ignition from II to III, I can hear a relay within the BECM clicking.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Dave

right my son, check in front of the plenum to see if the single wire plug and the multi plug are connected properly, i have no idea what they are for but i know my enine wont start without em connected and it sounds exactly like yours, also check yr in park or neutral as i have made that mistake before!!!

i had a similar problem with my older p38 turned out the becm had lost sync with the engine ecu, ended up sending the becm away to be unlocked;)

Thanks guys for the replies. I have checked around the plenum area all seems ok. Tomorrow I shall look at the feed to the engine ECU just to make sure. The guy who has the testbook reckons he can fix the relays within the BECM. So I'll have a play around before giving it him.

Dave
