Got word from the garage today on the situation with my Defender 90 which was at first leaking smoke from the oil filler cap and then had a runaway diesel which I managed to stall a couple weeks back.

The garage have recommended that I either pay £1700 to get the engine reconditioned but that does not include any work on the turbo which may also be damaged. He said my best choice was for one of their workers there to work on it privately and place a Disco 200tdi engine with 70,000 miles on into it, this includes the newer turbo, radiator, clutch and any other bits that are needed, fitted for £1800.

Firstly what are Defenders like with Disco engines dropped in them?

Secondly do you think I should take legal action on any kind towards the people I bought it from, it was advertised as being a solid motor and I got it from a garage in Blackburn. The car was advertised on Auto Trader through the garage's page but it was actually a project of the garage owners and I bought it from him at the garage but the money was to his account privately as the car was in his name.

Do you think I should seek to get financial help from the garage/bloke or even ask for a refund for the vehicle and give it him back? I love the car, it looks great for its age and is well done up but I have only owned it for a month and this was its first trip that really exceeded 40 miles at a time.

Any advise on any of these matters will be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

£1800 !! Tell em to feck off..£500 buys you a complete disco, scrap/sell the rest and drop engine in self or pay someone on here £500 to fit it.

Oh and you're fecked with any legal action as u paid money to private account not busines..sos.

Spot on ,classic case of so called landrover specialists being rapists even your old engine is worth some money if its a genuine defender 200

As said 1800 quid they are taking you for a right monkey, tell em to **** off then put a thread on here giving your location for some one to help fit a disco lump, sure that for 500 nicker there will be plenty of takers plus 500 for a scrapper disco that's a grand saving you 800 nicker ;)

As above stick your location in your profile.

Get your self on ebay etc find a rotten disco for <£500 with a decent 200/300tdi.

Do some reading,

Its a TD - 200tdi Conversion but will give you an idea of what needs doing to fit a 200tdi disco engine.

Stick a fred up with £500 offered to the first man to help me fit an engine and you'll be sorted!

Great advice above. We fit 200tdi disco engines into a Defender in a day and charge £300 to fit them. Do as advised... buy a car or engine on ebay and get an indepedent to fit it!! There are lots of crooks out there!
