So the government go to the trouble of generating construction and use regulations making them law for no reason. Try taking your seatbelts out or running a radial tyre on the same axle as a cross ply. Then explain that you don't go along with the old construction and use regulations to the MOT tester or the nice man from VOSA when you get spot checked. There is a legal requirement to have a cat fitted to ANY vehicle used on the public roads made in or after 1993 whether YOU like it or not. Is your vehicle capable of running off petrol, does it still have a tank, do you start on petrol and change to gas, can you run it off petrol between gas fills? If you can you need a cat. Construction and use regulations don't cover exhaust manifolds, don't talk daft.

Or fitting coil springs...?

well hte rule is dont get stopped if you drive well and dont have an accidents etc your car will never get looked at apart form the odd xmas road check lights tyres and insurance disc etc.

So keep the mods sensible and drive at the legal speeds etc and no probs.

Tony:)

No don't think they would be covered. Construction and use regulations are about general vehicle standards, changed from time to time, that must be met by manufactuers. However it maybe a modification that would need to be declared to your insurance company under their rules.

Think the chances of getting pulled and checked by someone that knows what they are looking at are slim, take my '32 hotrod for instance,it runs exposed wheels, no bonnet at all and exhaust headers sticking out the side, but ive never been pulled in nearly 5 years since ive had it on the road, and its not exactly quiet!!

How did pass the checks without mugaurds. Or did it have some at one time?

Its on a 1932 logbook so it never needed an inspection as far as i know, (im the 3rd owner brought as an unfinnished project with an mot, it was registered in 2001) logbook says manufactured in 1932 but registered in 2001, and has an age related, non transferable plate. It came with removable cycle fenders but i never use them. Police have even waved at me as they drive past!! I just dont think they are bothered as someone already said,if you dont drive silly etc your fine.

Nice one, looks a nice motor. Thought it may have been on a Q plate then it would need an inspection i believe.

the p38 was designed with air suspension and not coil springs their could be a stability/safety issue here ,allthough my insurance company regard bigger alloy wheels as a modification but not an lpg conversion, they also ask you if your cat has been removed

So... just to pick up on this because the thread seem to go squewed a tad... does anyone know anyone or anywhere where I can get the deCat sections of exhaust for a P38 then..? And will, with an upgraded air filter and reMap, make much BHP difference?

Chipping a p38a will not gain any power gains but be £000.00 out of pocket
Spend the money on cam and heads to gain power increase
Decatting will gain you 25 bhp ish but you will fail the Mot

Now the cheat round the Mot is this
Get a log book for a older engine have the engine number changed to the older vehicle keep the copy of the log book and produce this at the Mot and they will test to the engine age not the vehicle simple

OK, thanks for that. So how pricey is replacing the 'cam and heads' (what are these - sorry). On the deCat MOT front, I'm in LPG gang, so believe it will sail through as long as they've switched to gas when testing..

regards,

Steven
