Dammed kids, do you think Landy is OK for this

But I was going to put it to good use. I have been invited on a Green Laning trip between Christmas and New Year, I had also plans for the summer including buying some bling like off road tyres and snorkle :(

How old is your Landy? I agree that they are not uncomfortable. My back is terrible after a few hours in the Focus but fine in the Defender. Must say I sometimes get cramp in my clutch foot when I drive in the rush hour.

Are you saying we horsey people drive slow :D Its true, nothing like horses falling over on corners to destabilize the vehicle.

This is it, its a 1991 J Reg, not sure about the tdi bit.

Cough erm there's a sticker saying tdi ;)

Did I meet you at the blue barn and tried to sell you some wheels nd tyres, when you First bought yours?

Yes :D :D Still have the road tyres on it

stuff that wears out.
belts, tensioners, brake pads, bushes, brushes, universal joints, flexi pipes, clutch, bearings, fluids (engine oil, gear oils for main box, transfer box, axles, swivels, fluid for power steering, water for radiator coolant, windscreen washers, dot 3 or 4 for brake & clutch) bulbs, switches, tyres,
pretty much anything that moves, tho some are more relevant than others.

an i know pretty much nak all about jap stuff.

Who wants to know about Jap stuff, dont like them myself but they do seem to be reliable. No character at all though, you wouldn't give one of them a name :D

As for the consumables, I think you checked a lot of those recently and some of them even I can manage. What do you think, you have seen it, worth a try or not???

i wouldnt class a clutch , universal joints etc as consumables

normally its the frequently changed service items. ie .fluids and filters.

You should be ok. Don't envy fuel bill for a long distance tow!

True, but then you should see the bill for entry fees  makes the fuel seem cheap.

Eg Great Yorkshire - either £50 odd quid a class or 2 x £35 membership to the society and then only £25 a class.

Then for the further away 3/4 day championships there is accomodation, unless I want to camp in the horse trailer (dont do tents) and food

i am getting around 15mpg from mine with two horses in my ifor505 same as yours just a K plate 200tdi but mine has done around 100k more

it pulls it fine just have to stir the box a little on some of the big hills in northumberland thats all

is selling the Landy and box an option and replace with a small cheap lorry ? i know that was something i considered :eek::eek:

Thats not bad on hills. Mine seems to be doing over 20 mpg but I only tested it over a short distance. Mine is a 510 and usually only have one of them in at a time when competing the bigger shows. Might take two locally but that doesn't really matter.

I keep considering it  but I like having two vehicles, its always useful to have a spare and a 4 x 4 is good for snow and floods :D

If I could afford a really good one I might, but the people I know who have bought cheaper lorries have had no end of problems and huge repair bills.

And who cares about the kid and "The Beast" perhaps I should make them walk.

I'm going Green Laning on 27th, just had a PM confirming it :D :D :D :D

i would stick with it ;) i plan on selling mine soon but only to replace it with a newer 90

plus i like the option of just chucking all the riding kit and spare water and haynets in the back so easy to sweep out

Yes they are great :D :D

Would like a roof rack for extra storage but it would hit all the height barriers. Shame they are not detachable.

I disagree. Gonna get flamed now, but i had a mk2 2.8 shogun and I absolutely loved that beast. plenty reliable and pulled like a train, plus it had lots of toys AND a rear difflock and enough to fiddle and play with mechanically to keep it interesting, but not too much to get bored with or keep her off the road. She had bags of character and was waaay more comfy than any land rover I've ever driven. The only reason I sold out for a disco was the fact she was my only car at the time and would only return about 18-20mpg. On a good day.

despite owning two land rovers and living with a yard full over the last year I'd have her back in a heartbeat, or consider another if and when the disco ever goes.

I named her, too.

and just because I can, heres some pics.

But will the Landy stand up to this kind of mileage. Do I even want to try. I have the best breakdown cover plus NFU cover to recover the horses and trailer if necessary but I dont want to need it.

Any thoughts, do I have to part with my Landy, I really really dont want to. I already have two cars so I cant afford a third.

Well, I'll tell you a secret. I'll probably get drummed out of the magic circle for this, but the Land Rover doesn't actually know how far you're going. It doesn't know whether you're doing about 10 local trips or one long one. I know we like to pretend they're sentient, but they're not that smart. There's nothing that can't be replaced when it wears out. With things like belts, seals and filters, bushes, shock absorbers and the like try and steer clear of Britpart and pay a bit extra for OEM items. There's no reason why it shouldn't do three times that mileage, probably on the original engine. Keep driving it and have fun.

Dont know about this one, but the Disco certainly did. When it got tired it hitched a ride on the back of a Green Flag truck :D

Well, they can't read the roadsigns. 'Ooh Kilmarnock, that's a long way from home, I'll just snap my fan belt'. Well I think mine probably can, but then it's special.

Yes so was my Disco. It was just about to be battered by a hail storm so it decided to make us suffer as well. Stuck the sun roof and windows open :D
