Hi I'm after abit of advice please. Last week I took my discovery in for a service up until this point my car was running fine. Had a service day after I'm driving along an it started making a knocking sound from the engine. Bearing in mind until the service it was fine rang the mechanic who came out an recovered it before even looking at it he said the Crank shaft has snapped. Now what I want to know is would a warning light not come on or would my engine not of sounded funny before this. How can a perfectly running car have a service then the next day this happens??

Hello and welcome:)
i take it this is a d3-4 v6 if so they can snap with no warning, there seams to be a design floor in the engine.

The TDV6 engine fitted in the D3, D4 and some range rover sports, is known to snap cranks. Yer get problems with oil supply. Then things get hot and seize. Then it snaps the crank.

I would be wondering if the garage run the engine without oil. How many miles after the service, did it fail? There is always the "bad luck" chance of it happening. What mileage is it on? What level/mileage service did yer have done?

D3 is more likely oil pump/tensioner failure, nowt to do with service.

BUT its not unkown for the oil filter to be fitted incorrectly causing engine failure shortly after a service, be thare and ask for the oil filter to be removed whilst you check it, if the little plastic nipple is bent then its the mechs fault.

Thank you for your replys I am going to ask these questions. I just find a car running perfect before it was messed with can go in for a service drive about 20 miles in it an it's Crank shaft is supposedly snapped but with no prior warning.

You must not just ask the questios, you need to be there and see the filter removed, otherwise how are you going to know it is your old filter they show you?

The garage will be concerned about what has happened. Probably want to riggle out of being blamed. When the crank snaps its easier to get a replacement engine. Some find it cheaper sourced from a crash damaged car where the engine still works.

That's what I am going to do i am going to ask them to remove it while I am there. Its not our normal garage we use we normally use garage that only does land rovers an are massively regretting not going to him now. Don't know why we didn't to be honest. The garage we used is saying its not down to anything he has done which he is going to say isn't he now. It's all to much of of coincidence it was running perfect I've read they can just go but I can't see it straight after a service it should of been running brand new after a full service surely there would of been signs that something weren't right. I don't know I'm no mechanic but I do know my dream car is now broke all since I had it serviced an I am gutted to say the least. Thank you for your help..

There are many companies advertising to fix this sort of problem. Most are fake names used to hide the bad publicity of who they are, from sunbeam street in Wolverhampton.

I had exactly the same experience on the A34 almost 2 weeks ago. The garage have given an overview of it now and said spend 16k having a new engine fitted or sell it for 2k for scrap...... :(

If you pick a garage to do the work, check with us first. One scamming company has many names/adverts online, to catch out owners with engine trouble.
