I wonder if anyone can help. I just recently got LR to change my coolant and thermostate as it was 2 years oldtd in my 98 1.8 petrol Freelander. I supplied the coolant and thedistilled water. In the past the temperature reeding was always at half. Now sometimes it is at half and sometimes it goes down to a third and stays there. I find this bizzar. Anyone any ideas,

Nothing to worry about.
Thermostats come with different heat ratings, it could be that LR fitted a 'cooler' one to help prevent the dreaded head gasket failure.

Stupid question but...are ya always checking when its cold or warm, hot? Doesnt make as much difference with coolant but I notice in mine it move up and down depending on engine temp!

Do they have a cooler thermostat? Sorry but first time I read about this. Do you know the part number? Does it only 1.8 or they have one for kv6?

Correct, quickly heats up to half and shouldnt go past this point. Und apologies, thought you were reading coolan level in tank.
So i take it that it is not normal that the cooling temp is at half way and then goes down to a third. This is an intermittent thing as sometimes it goes halfway and stays there, then it drops and not always when i am crusing up the freeway either. I suspect that landrover either did not bleed the system properly and did not mix the coolant either befor adding or that the new thermost is faulty.

Not normal for it to drop, not so that it would be noticable anyway. Loads of people on the forum that could start throwing possible causes out for you. I think if this started happening after the dealership worked on it then take it back to them! They have a responsibility to you and your vehicle.

or maybe the electric fans cutting in at 1/2 way, and cooling it to 1/3rd, then switching off, so it warms back up to 1/2, comes back on etc etc
HI all, Thanks for all your help, Me thinks that i will bring irt back. On another note there is a kit PCH001190 that was developed by LR to speed up the time the engine warms up. It has a thermostate in line with the hoses and you have to block off the old thermostate. Does anyone know if this is a worthwhile upgrade or not?

my understanding is that this mod is the REMOTE THERMOSTAT mod - and as for worthwhile - on a 1.8 it is essential.
Ok, i have placed the order for the remote thermostat and also for all replacement hoses. Came to under £150. will get it done one evening next week. Better be safe than sorry, considering that the new head and gasket has 20 k on the clock now. Maybe this one will last forever now!

OK, i brought it back to LR to check my cooling issue. At the same time i had ordered the remote thermostat mod. and also the rest of the hoses, as i dint want their to be a weak hose. Anyway, LR decided to do the conversion for me without my authorization, and also to charge me 4 hours labour for the honour! I refused to pay the labour, so began the bartering. in the end i won and left without handing them a cent. When i got home 20 miles away, i went to double check the job, and guess what? they had managed to break one of the vacum hoses right side of that black plastic think by the injectors (or at least thats what i think it is), and they had tried to super glue it back.It haden't held. Further to that, i suspected that they had not placed the blanking plate or seal where the old thermostat was. Why, well they returned my old hoses and no thermostat. On the parts invoice (that bit i did pay) those items were missing. I had also ordered a rear diff front mount, and they fitted that Too!!!!
So now my hippo had a broken vacum hose, two thermostat and a coolant leak. ( They have finally admitted as well that there was a leak in the system, but also said that it could have been air trapped in the system and that was normal in all cars!!!! Eh! I think not, if you do the bleeding of the system properlly.)Well, the next morning i brought it back and let rip. I haven't seen the car since, and its been promised for today, whilst they first learn to read and then call LRHQ to find out what all those workshop manuals are for. The upside for most of you, is that i live in southern Ireland, so may not be applicable in England, before you ask me which dealer!
