Which means you have higher EGTs and consumption than normal cos that's below the normal operating temp

EGT's are normal, coolant temperature sits around 80-81*C normally. 84*C is the most I have seen when driving enthusiastically.

what's "normal" for you? and the consumption? a td5 at 80 - 81 is running "rich" unless it's remapped for that kind of ECT/FT, .... NORMAL RUNNING TEMP for Td5 is 90*C. Believe me or not

I was getting coolant temps of up to 105*C when towing and around 95*C normal driving which I know is relatively normal but outside my own comfort zone. So I fitted the lower temp thermostat.

My statement was about higher EGTs(exhaust gas temp) and condumption with low ECT(engine coolant temp) which is a fact and you said
so what is normal EGT for you? unless you misunderstood me and you dont even have EGT gauge ?

Target boost is set at 1.45bar and I have not seen more than 750*C EGT even on the hardest of pulls.

IMO 750 EGT is higher than normal even under heavy load for a Td5, i've seen 650 max on mine while towing a fully equipped shetland 650 boat uphill since i have the proper remap and normal tyres cos i've seen all kind of scary temps otherwise

I'm sure I will be back to a genuine thermostat soon as this 78*C one was from Bearmach so no doubt will not last long. At the time of changing it last summer I just needed it to work. Interestingly the genuine thermostats I have seen lately have no temperature stamp on them like they used to

Tom and sierrafury thank you both! I will go with what was suggested PEL500110 as I find myself quite far from home with the trailer on the back from time to time and it’ll give me more confidence and hopefully won’t get the engine so hot when going up the steep hills of Devon.. Guys any recommendations in which coolant i can use, I haven’t changed it in 6 years so guess that should be done also, Tom I wish you lived closer

Any OAT is OK just mix it 50/50 with water unless it's already mixed

So which is best? A genuine LR thermostat that isn't stamped with a temperature or PEL500110 ? If PEL500110 is 82*C then that is only 4*C more than the one I have so surely won't make that much differences to EGT/consumption ? We just ordered more genuine LR thermostats PEM100990LR and none of them are temperature stamped.

Will my landy definitely run a little cooler with that thermostat PEL500110 (Genuine)? I plugged the nanocom in this morning on the way to work and I was getting 92 to 95 normal driving that wasn’t even with the trailer on the back and a fairly flat road doing about 40mph, I saw you had it on yours but the post was a couple of years ago are you still using it? Did you notice a small decrease in temps as you were hoping?

Tom I just saw on rimmerbros you can get PEL500110 as a genuine Land Rover part, abd it says it’s fir the td5 as well, can you get hold of these as it appears there aren’t many places who stock this part number as a genuine item

Having a trailer on shouldn't make any difference to running temperature.
The radiator and fan have lots of spare capacity if they are in good order.
So when the engine is worked harder, the thermostat should open more, allowing the rad to cool the engine.
If you are sure your thermostat is good, and the engine is going above thermostat temperature, there is another problem, probably a silted up rad, or a fan that isn't working properly.

Thanks the thermostat got changed 6 or so years ago when I got the landy and the water pump, to be on the safe side, it has always run around that temp but I’m not sure what thermostat went on there and it’s due a coolant change anyway so will get a new stat put on there as well while I’m at it, and clean the rad out too

Yeah I've got 1x genuine and 1 x OEM coming tomorrow so I can have a look at them. I am undecided which to fit or whether to change from the 78*C one at all.

It's these : Thermostat Housing 78 Degrees Suitable For Discovery 2 TD5/V8 And Freelander 1 1.8l K Series Engines - PEL500110 - FIRST LINE Branded - Bearmach
PEL500110 is not normally a 78*C as far as I know, but the thermostats throughout the range are quite confusing especially when they don't stamp them with the temps, although these 78*C ones are marked.

Genuine PEL500110 arrived today - no temperature stamp, it was only stamped “waxstat”. Apart from being grey it looks identical to the genuine PEM100990.
