Watching the temp gauge doesn't always tell you if the engine is at risk of over heating. I had a puma transit rubber pipe leak coolant when the pipe rubbed against a cable. Result was the temp gauge showing normal running temp. Engine management cut the power into some sort of limp mode to save the engine. A coolant sensor would have given a warning earlier. Temp sensor was reporting air temp instead of coolant temp. You can't see the coolant level when driving so a coolant level sensor is a good idea.

That's the one to go for.

However there is a kit for pre or post 1a 1.8 if u have a pre 1a it includes a jumper loom connects below the engine ecu where there is a row of connectors (n/s). Also a new header tank and float sensor unit.
On post 1a u get a small loom from sensor to ecu where u add 2 wires to the main connector on the ecu. Both put the engine warning light on when the level drops to low ( does not store a fault just top up and light goes out)
Note for post 1a will need software update to work correctly normally dealer charge 1/2 hr

The problem with the coolant low sensor kit is location. It's a float in a pipe. If water loss is rapid, you get no warning at all.
It's much better to fit a float swtich into the header tank. I've done this on my MG F.

I fitted me own coolant level sensor. It's the best mod you can do to a Freelander.

What kind of alert system are you using Hippo?
I am just about to fit a float switch to my V6.
I did think about making the amber (!) dash warning light flash when the coolant is low. Your thoughts please.

that would be great, my expansion tank has the small cracks on the top so getting a new one and fitting a level sensor would be a 2 in 1 job.

Yes thats the level sensor I used. When fitting it to the ball shaped reservour its a pig to make sure it stays sealed during use. A flat sided reservoir would be much betterer.
