Can anyone tell if a TD5 engine will run off cooking oil, not necessarily a full mix but something like 50/50.

Cheers.

judging by what other members have said the answer uis yes at about 60/40 although personally i've a 200tdi which i run on used engine oil. land rover claim that it will damage your engine but then they would say that. do a search starting with 2 stroke oil additive.LEE

Cheers Bev. Would that be a 60 (diesel) / 40 (oil) mix or the other way round

I have heard of people getting problems with the injectors having run veg oil or bio. I would have a good search on a number of the forums around. Mud-Club has a bio fuels section.

It's been pretty positive so far, all TD5 owners have said no problems running a 50/50 mix. Some even as much as a 75/50 in summer-time.

A 95+ mix with upgrades to the engine.!! :O

This landy groove gets better each day! :D

used engine oil? wont that be like following the red arrows? (loads of blue smoke??):D:D
No. I mix 50/50 and the only smoke I get is on start up from cold. Not much more than straight DERV. Obviously if you floor the throttle with the engine bogged down in a high gear you'll get some smoke but that happens with DERV as well.
I once tried straight engine oil mixed with 10% unleaded but have to admit it did smoke a bit even when hot.
The military and the pikeys have been using if for years with no problem. Just run a tank of DERV through before your MOT and no one is any the wiser.

This is interesting.

What's DERV? Some kind of engine redex engine cleaner?
Used engine oil. Can you recommend any brand or is it anything will do? Also where is usually cheapest to get it, free if possible.
Also have you tried using this with a TD5 engine?

Cheers.

I know I know I'm asking questions that are a bit gimpish.
But this is my first land rover I'll have so I've got to ask 'em. After all you don't want a shagged engine and be saying ' But some guy on a forum said it was ok'

Remember, there's no such thing as a daft question, only daft answers.

So cut the newguy some slack eh?

Cut you slack? No.However when i cock up, and I will, you can rip the **** outta me.Thats how it goes.:D Everyone on here from new to old gets the **** taken, its all friendly. And whilst me answers are a bit arsey they are still factual. Or at least i try to be.:nospamhere:

Ah, right now I see your groove and ways man.

All good

What I meant by where to get it used engine oil though was if certain car garages might be conducive to letting us landrover folks roll up and take it off their hands.
Has anyone tried this, or will they stick 2 fingers up?

you will probably find that they will be happy to give it to you it's a problem to them. round here they have to pay for disposal.LEE

used engine oil?? im still a bit 'shocked' by this one.. is this a td5 thing, or will a 200tdi be ok?? do you have to change the fuel filter more frequently?? (i have alot of used engine oil...) is it gonna pump out enough blue smoke to attract the attention of the boys in blue?? 50/50 mix.. i imagine if you get dipped by customs and excise you could always say engine/turbo fault...:D

Pretty much any diesel engine will run on it so long as you dont have an optical fuel contamination sensor which wont like the black colour.
If you pre-filter the used oil BEFORE tipping it in your tank then you will not have to change your filter any more often than you do now.
If customs dip your tank then all that will be in there is DERV and used oil which you can tell them came from your last oil change as you had no way to dispose of it. Duty was paid when you bought it new so I dont see why there would be an issue. Its yours to do with as you want.
An engine/turbo fault wont put oil into your tank so thats not a good excuse.

How much preparation does used engine oil need before you can tip it in your tank?

Can you mix used engine oil with veggie oil/WVO and diesel?

Used engine oil needs filtering and cutting with petrol/parafin/white spirit to get the viscosity something like diesel before you use it.
I personaly would not mix veggie as well.
It works for me and I've done over 5K miles last year using a 50/50 brew.

So roughly, how much petrol would you add to a litre of used engine oil?
