Driving home a few days ago my 1.8 Freelander started coughing a bit. Got home to find no water in cooling system and cream replacing engine oil. The K series strikes again. Called AA to get a tow to garage. AA diagnosed as head gasket gone to to stuck thermostat - overheating of engine etc. At no time did temp light come on or guage move from normal. AA guy told me there is some kind of conversion available that moves temp sensor to a new position on top hose. Any body know anything about it or where i might get one?

Hey Tony T, join the club. I think we've all had head gaskets fail here including my 2.5 litre V6.
Anyway, there is a mod I beleive which involves the thermostat. I thought it was purely a new thermostat which re-acted at a different temperature, keeping the engine cooler.

the modification is a new radiator hose which includes a thermostat, with this you also fit a modified header tank and cap(allready fitted on later models) you need to remove the old thermostat from the rear of the block though,as marksurry says it is for better engine cooling.

the latest fix from landrover is yes youve guessed it and about time too, multi layer steel headgasket as used in kv6 engines, also to fit at the same time a new bearing ladder frame (the part that the head bolts screw into).

I have spoken with the mechanic today. Before I could mention your comments guys, he suggested the new style head gasket and thermostat mod (moving to new position atfront of engine?) which gives some confidence considering he is not a Land Rover specialist!

for referance can you find the part number for the new style head gasket should i have any probs ?

already gone once at 38,000 but want to be ready when the next time comes, could be next week could be 10 yrs who knows

lets say i hope it go`s about 76,000 that will do me as i`m on 48,000 now so have a couple of years, when they did do my 2002 they did replace the coolent bottle and i`m convinced that as helped matters by letting it breath better, and yes mine as the later remote mounted thermostat set up ,i still see loads of R reg ones around that have never had the head gasket probs and thay have 100,000miles on the clock so who knows

This one lasted to 64K so its not done bad considering. Popped in to garage today. He now has a TD4 in with a U/S head and other damaged cused by same. Estimate £2500!!!! and its only done 37K!!!

Got it back today complete with new plumbing for ccoling system and a hefty bill to say the least. Smythe The gasket part no. is LVB000320 and apparently it is cheaper from Rover Dealers than Land Rover!

Thanks for your input guys.

Tony
