I love my hippo to bits, but theres now a strong likelyhood Ill be moving to London to go to university. Being a poor student in London of all places I wont have anywhere to keep her let alone pay for running costs. Im planning on getting a little 125cc motorbike again as Ill need my own transport to get to placements (training as a paramedic :D ) but a big ol 4x4 isnt a viable option, Ill spend more time sat in traffic than anything else and charged a billion pounds every time I go near the congestion charge zone.

I was considering SORNing her and keeping her til I graduate but Ive got nowhere to store her. Which leaves me with the only real option I can see being to sell her, I dont particularly want to but cant see any other option.

So I was wondering whats it really worth? Looking on Autotrader and eBay for a general guide of prices they seem to vary wildly from about £800-5000. And what should I do to get the most money possible out of her? (without suggesting petrol and matches ;) )

Mine's a 5dr 2003 FL1 K series 1.8 serengheti, 61k miles, 1 previous owner, full service history, comes with all the modcons, electric everything, power everything, aircon, HDC, new alloys, 5 new tyres, CB radio setup, immaculate bodywork, LR rubber mats & boot liner, leaky boot cubby hole fixed (well, sorta) and 10 months MOT.

What would be a fair price to expect, and what can I do to maximise the value?

Cheers :)

And weripoffanycar offered a (fairly) generous £1800 for it, considering every car Ive owned in the past theyve only offered the minimum £50 for I was shocked :p

But if they offer that much, I reckon I can get at least £2500-3000 for it selling it privately? Or am I being unrealistic?

Blimey I reckon the £1500 I paid for my 2003 Td4 Serengeti 3door must be a bargain then, good luck with it mate, as for we buy any car.com they offered me 164 quid for my '97 Golf Gti and that was before they wanted 49.99 admin fees so they can go f*ck themselves!

It's low mileage so should sell easily. Haven't a clue on petrol prices though sorry

£1.279 here :D

Sorry, had to, in other news, best of luck with selling it, sometimes we have to do these things, I had to sell the best car I ever had to buy a house, but now I have a house, so can't complain too much!

Erm, riding a bike in London, you will probably need firsthand experience/assistance of paramedics !!!! And I don't think that counts for the "work experience" part of the course !!!

I lost a couple of mates to bikes around London and those that lived were generally held together with metal screws.

I need something that can get through traffic, and cant rely on public transport :( When I go on placement if I have to be at an ambulance station on the other side of london at 0600, if Im not there by 0559 they leave without me and I lose a days training. So sitting in London traffic jams for hours on end in a freelander wont do me any good unforutunately :( And bugger cycling! Id look like the gimp from pulp fiction in tight cycling lycra! :D

Ive rode bikes before and dealt with crap weather :p As a student the uni provides a discounted oyster card with years travel pass on it, but I need something that I can rely on - which considering how bloody often the tube drivers are on strike or stations closed or delays for maintainance, it isnt :p And Ill be doing all sorts of odd shift patterns so no guarantee the tube will even be running when I need it.

Doing a bit more digging on eBay, seems the average sort of price for a K series with similar mileage and condition is between £2-3k, I reckon I should be able to get closer to £3k for mine as its in brilliant condition. That would set me up nicely with a bike and maybe a DAS too in a few months, or perhaps my C1 liscence.

I sold our last car to a small dealer was suprised he offerd me over the book price for a private sale nice quick easy. He said he prefers to buy from individuals rather thsn trade or auctions.
