Considering Discovery 3 2.7 diesel what are known problems

Just wanted to add after selling my disco just ordered an Izuzu Dmax. Still keeping my old 300tdi and got another disco 1 to rebuild.
 
I thought a FL2 might be a more reliable purchase but after looking into things it would seem that they are having serious and expensive issues with rear diff and steering problems, just read some of the posts on the Freelander section here so it would seem not a great alternative!

The FL2 is generally much more reliable than the D3,and the rear diff faults are not THAT common,and can be fixed by independants for much less than main dealer prices.The steering faults again are not that common,some of the ones my customers own have had only routine servicing and are either close or past the 100,00m mark - not many D3's/RRS's have been that good...
 
Neither had steering nor rear diff( haldex) problems on the two fl2 s that I have owned, auto box and rear boot switch were problematic, LR paid for the box
 
I'd say stay away. Ours has just died a grim death and now needs a new engine.. After numerous quotes and advice we've been informed that what has happened to ours is a common fault
I am currently waiting for landrover to get back in touch
 
Basic problems that most will have is the electron handbrake fails, and front upper and lower wishbone bushes fail. If you can, check that these have been sorted, or walk away , the rest is basically down to maintenance , obviously somethings will fail, but that's true on every vehicle.

Do you have anymore info?
What was the fault?
What year?
Mileage?
Service history?
Oil level checked regularly, i.e. at least once a month?

It's done 130000 miles it's been serviced every year fluids checked regularly it has full service history most of its life from hunters .. last 4 years (since we owned it) it's been to a landrover approved garage ..
 
Basically from what I can gather.. I'm not a mechanic and he told me in simpletons terms.. The bearings fail.. which makes the crank shaft pack up.. I'm still waiting for a quote (other than hunters 14 grand stupid quote) and still waiting for land rover to get back to me :/
 
From previous threads, I wouldnt hold your breath for anything good from JLR!
There are more 2nd hand engines coming to market, and you can rebuild the TDV6, but either way if it needs replacing or rebuilding, figures of around £3-4 K seem usual.
Have you posted on disco3 site?
